Re: The Sardos, from Catania, Sicily
My husband's great grandmother was Nannie (Annie) Clay Sardo Sheehy.
She was married to James Joseph (JJ) Sheehy, a patent attorney in Washington, DC. in the early 1900's. One of their children was James Joseph Sheehy, Jr. , my husbands grandfather.
Nannie Clay Sardo was the daughter of Nathaniel Sardo and Annie Toner. They were related to, and lived in the town house of Michael Sardo on the SW corner of Pennsylvania Ave. and 10th W at 461 10th NW.
This is a somewhat famous house because it next door to the Peterson House across the street from the Ford Theater, where Pres. Lincoln was shot.
The story goes that Nannie' s brother, Joseph Sardo, 13, was working at the theater the night Lincoln was shot. Joseph ran to his house to see if they could prepare a bed for the Pres. AS it turned out the Pres was taken tot he Peterson House next door, instead.
Nannie and her sister, Mary were at the Peterson's home when Lincoln was taken there. There is a blood relic pillow that was the last pillow used before Lincoln's death. This is called the Sardo pillow and I think is now in the possession of Joseph Sardo who I think lives in Washington, DC.
I don't know the relationtionship between Nannie Sardo's family and Michael Sardo. I suspect Michal was an uncle.
I have read the same story about the Musical Sardo's. Nicolo Sardo was Michael's father.
From what I have seen, in 1815, Michael was given the property on 10th st as payment for his musical service in the military, but I not absolutely sure this is correct. Michael rented rooms to congressmen, as well as to his family. He ran a grocery out of that building, too.
He continued his musical career, forming a band with John Green.
He died At 84 , on April 12, 1860. He was paralyized at the time. He and his wife, Agatha, are also buried in Mt Olivet.
We only found out about the Sicilian connection recently. Up until that time, my husband had no idea that hat he was anything other that Irish, English, German, and Norwegian.
He never met his great grandparents. His great grandmother and grandfather were well know in Washington. His great grandfather died young at 55, though, in 1915 of the grip, as the deadly flu was called. It was the precursor to the flu epicemic of 1918 that killed over 100,000 people. Several other members of JJ Sheehy's family died within days of each other, as did their family priest. They, too, are buried in Mt Olivet.
Their oldest daughter was Edna James Sheehy. She was the first woman to graduate from Law school at what was to become Georgetown University. She took over her father's law practice when he died, She was also well known for her beautiful soprano voice and gave many well received recitals in the DC area.
I would love to get more info on the Sardo family. It's a fascinating family with a fascinating story.

Hello Melinda,
So nice to meet you! I have been trying to work on the paternal Sardo line tonight, but it is proving difficult! I am not sure exactly where Joseph and Annie tie in, but it is definitely the same family. Michael Sardo and Agatha Guglielmini had 3 daughters, of which I am descended from, so perhaps one of Michael's brothers. I am just not remembering who stayed in the states. The Lincoln story is amazing! I also had several relatives of that line go to Georgetown!
In Sicily, the Sardos were land Barons, back to antiquity it seems all in Catania, and Motta Camastra. Happy to share whatever I have with you
sorry this is short for now.
talk soon,
Breonna

Hellofortunata wrote: 10 Apr 2007, 06:13 Hello,
I have records of my family back to the 1400s in Sicily.
Surname Sardo, all land barons. Several left abt 1805 for America and Michele and Gaetano Sardo joined the US marine band.
I can give all the names, (Niccolo, Michele, Guiseppina...) but first I wanted to check, is anyone else a Sardo on here? Other surnames on the tree are Guglielmini (of a noble family from Palermo), Spampinata, and Romano.
Do you know where I could continue my search?
Thank you for anything,

I am a descendent of Giuseppe Sardo.
My great grandfather arrived in the US in 1910.
Do you have any information on the family.
He was born in Augusta.
