looking for information on my father's father, Ambrosio Macchi. Apparently he was from Ferno (Varese), San Macario. Any thoughts as to what to do next?

what are your research objectives? documents, relatives, immigrant ancesors, geography, history????? I like to assist people by directing them to appropriate website,addresses and locations so they can obtain what they want. The best way to start is to start at the end and work backwards meaning start with your immigrant ancestor arrival and head back to Italy. You can take a quick look at the number of persons in the town of origin by their surname at www.paginebianche.it. Insert surname in first line and town(s) in the third line and click CERCA. You neeed Ambrosio Macchi date of birth or year of birth to obtain documents. If he was your immigrant ancestor then you can get that info at Ellisisialnd.org records. Peter
