Nearest Relative
For Aurelio Sarcia, line 19, can anyone read the name and relationship of the nearest relative from place of origin?

Re: Nearest Relative
The first word is "parents", followed by what appears as "Giuseppe". The mother's name looks similar to the town name -- Floridia..?darkerhorse wrote: 15 May 2021, 02:23 For Aurelio Sarcia, line 19, can anyone read the name and relationship of the nearest relative from place of origin?

Re: Nearest Relative
I was thinking parenti, meaning relatives, not parents, but my guess was this person's father was Giuseppe, so that fits. I didn't have a guess for mother. The town name is Floridia.
You think both parents are listed?

Re: Nearest Relative
And on the line above it says "grandfather" so the description is in English.

Re: Nearest Relative
I think it's just Giuseppe with his town of residence being Floridia. I don't think the mother is mentioned.
I think it reads relative(s)- Giuseppe, Floridia. Relative instead of the usual father. No mention of the mother is my guess.

yes, you're right about the mother not mentioned. but the manifest is in English -- it's definitely "parents", not "parenti"...darkerhorse wrote: 15 May 2021, 03:00 I think it's just Giuseppe with his town of residence being Floridia. I don't think the mother is mentioned.

Re: Nearest Relative
Just offering my two cents here. I am also reading the word "parenti" and definitely not "parents". I also see the word "parenti" being used on lines 23 and 27. My thinking is that possibily the person completing the form wasn't familiar with the English translation of "parenti" (family/relative/kin) so just wrote down what he heard???

I do think it's his father.
The title of the manifest column refers to "nearest relative" so the clerk might have been writing "relative(s) Giuseppe", just repeating the column heading, not bothering to specify father.

Re: Nearest Relative
Regarding the town of origin, his naturalization record states that he was born in Floridia, Italy. On the other, I read "parenti". In older records I have occasionally seen parenti used to mean parents.

Re: Nearest Relative
I'm still convinced it is "parents". It's an American document, written in English. Every other line is English -- father, grandfather, mother, wife. Why would someone writing an American document suddenly use an Italian word..? Why not relatives..? It makes no sense. It just looks like a lazy "s" at the end to me. The dot could be a smudge or even dirt on the copy. The word "parenti" would have no meaning for an American official reading the document. You all can think what you like, but...

Re: Nearest Relative
Seems odd that all the other "parents" on the page also have dots over the "s".
Anyway, I thought these manifests were completed by natives in the country of origin.
