Nicola DeBiase, Cusano Mutri

Hello- I’m hoping some of you can point me in the right direction. I bought my parents a subscription to the big chain anscetry sites- but they had no luck getting any information. We had always thought Nicola was from Faiccio, Campagna... but then we found his wartime registration card (During WWII) and the card tells a different story- it says he was born in Cusano (Cusano Mutri?), Benevento. My parents had planned to visit before covid reared its ugly head, and if I can give them any leads for tracking down surviving relatives that would be wonderful. If any of you could give me advice it would be very much appreciated.

Here is his birth record in Cusano Mutri on 6 July 1873 born to parents Bartolomeo di Biase, 40, and Carmina Vitelli, 34.

rlw254 finding the birth record is the best proof you can have that Nicola was from Cusano Mutri!

The Italian State Archives seem to be extremely accurate. In researching my family on Ancestry.com, I was shocked at how many errors were published about my family (other people had incorrect information in their family trees... and American death records are absolutely riddled with errors, from incorrect parents listed, to incorrect cause of death, etc.). But the Italian State Archives seem to be very reliable.

So I would say Nicola was definitely born in Cusano Mutri! Good work by rlw254

Quick question for you all. I cross referenced the military draft records with the record of birth... I found records for Domenico Di Biase in 1870 and confirmed his parents as Bartolomeo Di Biase and Carmina Vitelli. I could NOT find a Rocco Di Biase born in 1875 in the records of birth for that year- but on the military draft it records Rocco's parents as Bartolomeo and Carmina.

Should I keep digging and try to find a Rocco Di Biase in a different year? This is VERY exciting for me, thank you all.

Also, are birth records available (online) for years prior to 1860 in Cusano Mutri? Based on the information I have Bartolomeo Di Biase was born in 1833 and his wife Carmina Vitelli would have been born in 1839.

To my knowledge, my great grandfather came to America without his brothers (but I have no idea if they stayed in Italy or emigrated somewhere else in the world). It would be amazing to trace this puzzle to some living relatives.

I feel a little stupid asking but, I'm looking in the index of some of the older books and there are almost no 'D' entries. Was the convention at the time to go skip that (in other words, list the last name as Biase rather than di Biase)?
