Not in Lista di Leva

Hello - I'm trying to obtain military records for my great-grandfather, born in 1876 in Messina (Messina). He and his brothers are all born, married and died in Messina, but none of them are in the Lista di Leva at Familysearch.org. I requested the foglio matricolare from the State Archives of Messina but they did not provide anything because they could not find him in the Lista di Leva. The Military District Office told me to make the request of the State Archives where the man was domiciled when he was 17. In this case, he comes from a long line of sailors, and I believe he may have been legally domiciled in the "maritime theater", meaning that he was living on a ship somewhere. His children recall that he was a decorated veteran of the First World War. Any suggestions ?

Kristen, do you have the birth records of your great-grandfather and each of his brothers? If their births were never registered for some reason, then that would be a reason why they may not be included on the Liste di Leve. Another reason might be that possibily their births were registered in another Province.

Thanks. I do and all of their births are recorded in the Province of Messina.

Le Liste di Leva della Marina Militare (di mare) sono diverse da quelle dell'Esercito (di terra).

Leva militare: i fondi e le serie:

Il fondo denominato UFFICIO LEVA conserva le liste della leva di terra per i maschi nati e residenti nei comuni dei mandamenti tra il 1840 e il 1944 e le liste della leva di mare per le classi 1857-1985. Nel fondo RUOLI MATRICOLARI sono raccolti i registri dei ruoli matricolari per le classi (nati ) tra il 1874 e il 1904, soldati semplici e sottufficiali arruolati in vari corpi. Per ogni iscritto nelle liste di leva vengono annotati maternità, paternità, il domicilio, la professione, i dati somatici e l'esito della visita (abile, riformato, rimandato). Sui ruoli matricolari vengono riportate notizie sulla durata del servizio militare prestato, le campagne di guerra,ricoveri e decorazioni fino al definitivo congedo. Le fonti sono soggette a periodiche integrazioni.
