I've exhausted every lead into my great grandfather's family - my last resort (other than traveling to Italy myself) is to write to obtain his military records - except I don't know Italian and the form letter I based this from is for another type of record and I've had to change some parts.
I guess I'll have to send it to each provincial archive office in the Lazio region?
This is what I want to say;
Dear Director:
I am trying to complete a history of my family and I would like your help.
Can you please supply me with the conscription record, the register of service and the discharge record for Francesco Roselli, born approximately 1884, unknown town in the region of Lazio. His parents names are similar to Salvatore Roselli and Lena George.
I am enclosing International Reply Coupons which are for the postage stamps required for your reply and wish for you to bill me for any records you are able to provide me.
I thank you infinitely for your assistance. In the event that the data is not available, I would however ask that you send me a reply in the negative.
Additionally, if the records do not exist for that period, or if you know of other sources, I would be grateful if you could suggest how my research could be pursued.
Thank you for your help, I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours Truly,
I'd really, really, insanely appreciate any help you can give me!
Translation help please!?
Re: Translation help please!?
Hello,
I don't think that you will ever get a reply to such a letter, unless you can find out the exact date and place of birth of your great grandfather.
Knowing only his birth year and his name would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack, therefore it would be advisable to do some more research before asking for his Italian military records.
