Geraci Siculo Record for Vincenzo Antista

Post by ItalianbellaSA »

Hi Everyone!

I happened upon a record in the Antenati site for a Vincenzo Antista (son of Gaspare Antista and Rosa Neglia that I have on my tree). I do not have Vincenzo listed on my tree so this might be someone I need to add.) I believe it is some type of death record. I noticed the name in the Index on Image 28. I did find the listing on Image 14, however, it is very long and I cannot read it. If I could please have someone translate the record I would be very appreciative.

Here is the link to the record:

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... ewsIndex=0

The title of the portion of record is called "Several". I'm not sure what that means in terms of what the records are actually about.

I thank you all in advance for any time and assistance.

It is hoped that the research I am doing helps to discover, preserve and celebrate my family history.

Hello Sue,

I thought that I was going to transcribe and translate a death record. Little did I know that it was instead like a couple of chapters out of a historical novel...

Anyway, the following is the first part.

Numero d'ordine primo

Number 1

In the year 1820, on the 20th day of February, at 23.00 in Italy, we Don Felice Salvo, Mayor and Civil Status Officer of the Municipality of Geraci, district of Cefalù, province of Palermo, received this note from Antonino Alesio di Paolo, 33 years old, by profession mule driver, subject domiciled in this town in via della piazza, ex officio of the Mayor and Civil Status Officer of the Municipality of Butera, with enclosed copy of the deeds formed in the office of said official of civil state and police the minutes and the act of recognition of the corpse of Vincenzo Antista, son of Gaspare Antista and Rosa Veglia, native of this city domiciled in via della Balacella (?), in regard to the violent death of the same occurred on the tenth of the current month of February of the current year of the following tenor:

"Office of the Mayor of Butera (illegible) 17 February 1820.
Sir, in accordance with the royal instructions assigned to the civil and police officers, I am obliged to report to you the violent death that occurred under the current tenth in the Burgio fiefdom of this territory in the person of Vincenzo Antista, domiciled in the Municipality of Geraci, that for greater intelligence I submit to you a copy of the deeds all formed for this purpose in this office containing the minutes and deed of recognition of the corpse made at the petition of Antonino Alessi, brother-in-law of the deceased, in order to make that appropriate use, while from my part will not fail in disengagement of justice to submit original minutes (?) the whole court to the Royal Prosecutor of this Caltanissetta Valley for organ of the judge of the district of Riesi (?) for the use of results. The mayor Gaetano dottor Gatto."

To the Mayor of Geraci

The year 1820 on the 11th day of February, on the notice (?) given to us by Giuseppe Berritta, domiciled in the Municipality of Castellazzo (?), who works as a blacksmith in the Burgio fief of this territory, of which his master Don Giovanni Giaconia di Mistretta is the renter, about a young man of about thirty (years) who called himself by the name Simone from Rosalia and of whom he does not know the surname, as the said Berritta asserts, was killed with a gunshot in the aforesaid feud of Burgio yesterday at eleven in the morning, we Dr. Gaetano Gatto Mayor and Police Officer of this Municipality of Butera, went from the aforementioned fiefdom in front of the venerable Church of Saint Peter under the Walls of this Municipality with doctor Don Michele Cammarasana, surgeon domiciled in this municipality in vicolo sant'Eliggio number 17, whose assistance we requested in order to have the state of the corpse checked in the manner established by law, and with Mario Rocco Toscano, domiciled in this municipality in strada del Tocco number 32, and Emanuele Boccadifuoco, domiciled as above in vicolo di Marzoni number 9, both witnesses who took part in the present minutes, and we found the bloodied corpse lying on the ground. Doctor Don Michele Cammarasana pointed out to us that the same had been wounded with a shot loaded with a bullet which pierced the occipital bone and penetrated up to the brain, ending the life of the unfortunate man.

We have also called in our presence Benedetto Giordano, about 44 years old, domiciled in the Municipality of Mistretta, as curator of the plows of Mr. Don Giovanni Giaconia of said Mistretta, renter of said fief Burgio, and Rocco Graziano son of Giacomo and of the late Giuseppa Fiore, domiciled in this town in vicolo del Curatolo number 5, peasant, and Rosario Brancato, son of the late Rosario and Giuseppa Ciprì, domiciled in this aforementioned town in the Quartararo street number 21, all three people who were present at the said murder, that is, said Giordano as curator of said plows, and called Graziano and Brancato both people who plowed the lands in said fief with the poor Simone, together with other plowmen who made up a gang of twenty people, and we asked to tell us how the said person was killed, if they knew the age and place of birth, and by whom was he killed.

The aforesaid Giordano, Graziano and Brancato replied that the murdered person when living used to be called by all the people of the said fiefdom Simone, never naming her surname, and that the same claimed to be a native of Rosalia of about thirty years. He was killed in the following way: around thirteen o'clock (?) yesterday morning while all the other plowers were working together, and among the others there was the famous Simone, we saw coming out (illegible) of soldiers on horseback, all armed with rifles, who were directed towards them riding in formation next to each other, and when arrived within distance of a road rope, the first started shouting: "there he is, there he is!". In this while the aforementioned Simone fled, the aforementioned first soldier on horseback chased him, and within another rope of road, not far from a great plain of various fiefdoms, which would made easy to capture him, all of a sudden the aforementioned first soldier fired a shot that immediately fell the fugitive dead without making any motion, having been hit in the skull. Then the aforementioned soldier got off his horse and approached the corpse, pulling him now by a foot or by an arm, making sure of his death, he got on his horse and went away with the other soldiers. In this while they saw a character coming on a mare who seemed to be the chief or captain of those soldiers, who addressed him with respect, and told him about the soldier who killed the man. The captain was saddened and deeply sorry, and reprimanded severely the aforementioned soldier. Then the captain wanted to see the corpse, and afterwards they all returned on horseback towards the stakes (?) of this fiefdom, then they (the witnesses) said they didn't know nothing else.

We then called the aforementioned Giuseppe Berritta in our presence, as the one who gave us the notice yesterday, and who was present in the rooms of that fief, and questioned him to tell us all that happened and for how much time had the aforementioned Simone worked in said fiefdom, or what the aforementioned captain said, and he replied in the following way: about a month before (?), not distinctly remembering the day, he saw two people come, who asked the superiors and curators of said fiefdom for work, which, seeming in their face people of no scandal, and who presumably for the lack of work had left their homeland, and that the superiors, moved by their prayers, decided to hire the two as workers to earn their own daily food, the deceased as a plowman, and the other as assistant to clean the stables. They respectively called themselves the captured Calogero and the deceased Simone from Rosalia, as they asserted, never saying their surname, which the said Berritta and all the people of this fiefdom never used to.

Meanwhile, yesterday morning at about thirteen (?) in the morning he saw Don Tommaso Gambara from Mistretta, domiciled in the Municipality of Castelbuono as captain of arms of the Cefalù District, together with a soldier from one of his companies, who went to the stables of said fiefdom, and the aforementioned captain of arms hastily asked Mr. Berritta where the two natives of Geraci were, without naming their name, to whom the aforementioned Calogero of Derrodia (?) came out, and was immediately arrested by the aforementioned captain and by the soldier, after the capture the captain said that his real name was Mauro, and asked Mr. Berritta what was his surname. Pierro (?) this the captain left the prisoner in the care of the soldier in the stables, and quickly went on horseback towards the plowmen that plowed in said fief, and within a short time he returned to the stables with six other soldiers of his company, and one of the soldiers who was sent to capture Simone, companion of the arrested man, told him that while he was plowing in the field with the other plowers he had fired a shot at him, which left him dead in the versura (?) of said plows. After hearing this th captain was very saddened and displeased, to the point that it was necessary to give him a little water, which he asked for, having been devastated by what happened.

Alll this done, having no other examination to do, nor any need for other people to hear, as it is sufficient to prove that the aforementioned Simone passed away due to a violent death, that he was killed in this way, the cause of death being known, and being no need for any further inquest in this matter, we police officers have declared that nothing opposes that the body of the deceased Simone was buried according to the ordinary forms, and we closed the present report that we signed with Mr. Don Michele Cammarasana surgeon, having said the other witnesses Mario Rocco Toscano and Emanuele Boccadifuoco, as well as Benedetto Giordano, curator of plows, Rocco Graziano, Rosario Brancato and all the other people who were present at the aforementioned killing, and said Berritta, of not knowing how to write .
So we have it and the municipal chancellor signed.

And here is the second and last part of the death registration.

Felice Salvo.

In the year 1820, on the 16th of February, before us Doctor Don Stefano Gatto, mayor and police officer, Antonino Alessi, son of Paolo, domiciled in the town of Geraci, aged 33, appeared. He alleged that, having acquired knowledge from Mr. Don Tommaso Gambaro, natural of Mistretta domiciled in Castelbuono, as captain of arms of the District of Cefalù, that on the 10th day of the current month together with seven soldiers of a company he went to the Burgio fief of this territory to capture Mauro who called himself Calogero and another known as Simone from Rosalia, ignoring his surname, that together with a soldier he captured the mentioned Mauro who posed as Calogero, while the other six soldiers went to the plowing fields of the said fiefdom and one of them soldiers discovered the said Simone in the midst of the plowers, and that all of a sudden, without any reason or necessity that obliged the said soldier, he fired a shot at him which hit him in the skull, for which he took the life of the said victim, as best seen in the minutes compiled in the records of this office under the eleventh (of the) current (month of) 1820, and that Mauro known as Calogero was transported to the prison of the Cefalù District, Mr. Antonino Alessi came to know that the deceased was his brother-in-law Vincenzo Antista, native of Geraci, husband of Calcedonia Alessi, son of Gaspare and Rosa Neglia, aged about 30, who had left his homeland with the said Mauro Antista, who found himself imprisoned for going to labor for about two months ago both, uncle and nephew, that the said Mauro Antista is the uncle of the late Vincenzo Antista, and as such petitions to see the body of the deceased to make sure of his death, and to report it.

After that we went to the venerable Church of Saint Peter outside the walls of this city, where the body of the deceased was buried, together with Mastro Luiggi Sottile, domiciled in this town in Strada della Maddalena number 2, and Mastro Sebastiano Vinci, domiciled in this town in the street of piazza number 41, both witnesses present at the recognition of the corpse. Therefore, having had the corpse dug out, and found it intact because the deceased - when living - was in perfect health, and having Mr. Antonino Alessi observed the corpse and taken an oath affirming that the same matches the body and clothing of his brother-in-law Vincenzo Antista, husband of Calcedonia Alessi sister of said Antonino Alessi, domiciled in the town of Geraci, and that Mr. Antonino Alessi ignores the reason because he chose to be known as Simone instead of Vincenzo Antista, and as representative of his wife Stefana Antista, sister of the deceased, has accused and accuses the soldier who killed his brother in law of murder, begging for justice to find proof of the crime and prosecute the offender and his accomplices, if there were any under the rule of laws.

After reading and explaining (the contents of this record) for the aforementioned Antonino Alessi and said witnesses of Sottile and Vinci, not knowing them how to write, we have the municipal chancellor and I signed.
(Signatures follow)

For the execution of article 87 of the civil laws, we immediately made this inscription on the two registers. We have also made the simple annotation on the fourth sheet of the two registers of death certificates corresponding to the time of the 10th February, the day of the death of said individual Vincenzo Antista, and we have signed this deed.

The mayor and Civil Status Officer
Felice Salvo.

Hi Arturo:
I thank you very much for the lengthy translation of this record. I have read it and am amazed by this. Gaspare Antista and Anna Rosa Neglia are my husband's great-great-great-great grandparents. So as I understand this transcription of the murder of Vincenzo Antista, a soldier gunned him down in a plot of land that was being plowed. Did Vincenzo change his name to Simone? The soldiers also captured and arrested Mauro Antista, Vincenzo's uncle. I need to read it again and make notes of the names and try and figure out who they all were. Do you think the soldiers were the Italian army OR soldiers of the Mafia?

I can now add Vincenzo and Mauro to my tree and I will definitely add this story in the notes section so other family members can know about this story that needs to be told.

Again, I thank you so much for taking the time to translate the entire document. I'm sure it took you quite a while but it must have felt like a murder mystery at times. If you have any other thoughts on this, please let me know. I am a little confused as to why the murder took place.

Hello Sue,

As soon as I started translating the whole document, I got caught in the story. Certainly provides a lot of food for thought, and leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

First and foremost, why a couple of illiterate peasants from Geraci (in the Northern part of Sicily) have to disguise their real identities and look for work in a farm of Butera (near Caltanissetta, over 100 Km. away from their hometown)?

Secondly, how come that - just a few days later - a squad of soldiers led by an Army captain is dispatched from their garrison to the farm for the sole purpose of capturing them? Surely someone - in or near the same town where they ended up - must have tipped them off, maybe for a reward or simply because "foreign" competition wasn't welcome in the local labour market.

It is also noteworthy to see that the squad of soldiers sent to capture Mauro and Vincenzo was dispatched from the battalion headquartered in Cefalù (close to Geraci) rather than from the ones stationed either in Caltanissetta or Piazza Armerina, which means that they were under orders to arrest them and take them back to their homeland to stand trial for something that happened there.

Maybe the two, during their travels, witnessed something they shouldn't have seen, and that was enough for them to leave their hometown and disguise themselves in order to stay out of danger. Or maybe there must have been some written or unwritten rule forbidding peasants to look for work elsewhere.

If it wasn't for a trigger-happy soldier that ended up killing one of those distant relatives of yours, this would have never made it to the records, and I wonder whether in some dusty shelf of a Sicilian archive lies a file containing documents pertaining to the arrest and trial of Mauro Antista.

Also, the political situation of the time was very tense. After the suppression of the Napoleonic government, in 1816 the Austrians had restored the Bourbon king to the throne of Naples where he ruled over Southern Italy as a ruthless despot, forcing the Liberal opposition underground. In July of that same year 1820 a revolt in Palermo in favour of the recovery of the island's independence was suppressed by Neapolitan troops.

While researching the locations where the events of this story had taken place, I found interesting to see that the fields of Burgio, where the tragedy unfolded, now host a restaurant with B&B: https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Re ... icily.html.

Re: Geraci Siculo Record for Vincenzo Antista

Post by ItalianbellaSA »

Hi Arturo:

I am still digesting this whole story and the sequence of events that took place. Do you know where the cemetery was located where Vincenzo was taken? It mentions " the venerable Church of Saint Peter outside the walls of this city". What city do you think they were referring to? I am going to put the story on my family tree and I would like to be able to update the details of his death, but not sure the actually church/cemetery is Geraci or another town mentioned.

Sue
It is hoped that the research I am doing helps to discover, preserve and celebrate my family history.

Arturo:
I just checked the regular death records of Geraci Siculo for the 1820 and found another record of the death of Vincenzo Antista. It is not as long as the other but maybe this will shed some light on the other record about his murder. Here is the link:

Thanks.

Hello Sue,

This is literally the second part of the record I have translated, as you can see by comparing the two original texts.

Kind regards,
Arturo.

Oh okay, thanks. I didn't realize. I don't speak Italian so it is hard for me to know. I want to thank you again for your help.

This was the time when the Carbonari was active in Italy. They were a grassroots organization, a secret society, dedicated to overthrowing foreign rule:

If the victims in this story were members of the Carbonari, that would be reason enough for a cross-country hunt by the soldiers.
