Living at same location

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Living at same location

Post by scraig32 »

Was it common in the early 1800s for a bride and groom to live at the same residence before marriage? The same address is listed on the marriage banns for my ancestors. The bride’s parents were both deceased.

Thank you

I doubt that was ever common. I think your case is an exception. Maybe because she was orphaned and/or she could have been a relative. Cousin marriage happened.

It was probably just the same street. Houses were not always numbered in the smaller towns and villages.

Here is this Angela. You will recognize it because it is the marriage of my mysterious Ippolita Perez, the one you help me so much with.

I have mechanical question for you Angela- If I want to respond to someone in a post that has not been current for a bit, how do I do that so that the person knows to look. Strange question since I’ve been on this site so long. Thank you

Hi Suzanne

I don’t believe they were living at the same place. They were living in the same street/area. The groom was living in strada SS Quaranta (Santi Quaranta Martiri), no number given, and the bride was living in Via SS Quaranta, no number given. It was “possibily" an area where the “nobs” in Palermo lived at that time. You might like to research this at some time.

Re your “mechanical” question. You could either send the member a private message or just simply respond to their post on the forum as you normally would. Give that a try. Hopefully they will get a message that someone has replied to the post.

Best to you.

Thank you Angela- this is very helpful and makes sense seeing that the names of the streets were different. I was not able to make that out before you pointed it out. I certainly will do as you have suggested and research some more about the “nobs” in Palermo. I assume it has to do with nobility, but it looks kind of like “snob” as well, lol. I am intrigued and will look into it ASAP. Thank you so much!

Thank you for the technical help as well. I was actually going to post some links that you suggested I post to one of my previous posts that you helped me with. It is RE: Location of Death Record for Provvidenza Damiani.. It has taken me a while but I have found many of the records you suggested I look for and I think it is becoming a little bit clearer. Maybe you can take a look at it sometime. Again, you have helped me so much over the years. I truly value your time and all of your advice and thoughts you have given me. Thank you again!!!

I've just had a look at it. Great work Suzanne. (And it's been my pleasure, and so interesting.)
