Parents of Bernardino DiStefano
Can anyone help in my quest to go further back in our family's history. My great grandfather Achille Distefano was born in 1885 in Colledimacine, Chieti, Abruzzo. His parents were Bernardino DiStefano and Maria Falcone. I have nothing on Bernardino's or Maria birth or death dates and nothing on their parents. Is there a site I can use to go further back? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

For starters,
Can you tell us if this is your Achille?

I did mange to find one Achille Distefano on ancestry but date of birth is 1877...wife's name Rose. It's obviously a different Achille since the one in the draft cards is single and the one going through Boston in 1909 is married to a Rose Battina.
Also, Trish, a memeber her has a lot of info on the Distefano surnames. I would contact her and she will also be able to provide you with info regarding ordering the microfilms for you town.
Hope this helps some..

Hi
Who was the immigrant - Achille or Bernardino? There is a widower Bernardino on the NY passenger lists born circa 1848, arrived in 1888 from the port of Naples.

Is this them in 1930?
Achille Destefano Giovina Destefano Bronx, Bronx, NY abt 1886 Italy Head
Giovina Destefano Achille Destefano Bronx, Bronx, NY abt 1886 Wife
Anna Destefano Achille Destefano,
Giovina Destefano Bronx, Bronx, NY abt 1912 Daughter
Josephine Destefano Achille Destefano,
Giovina Destefano Bronx, Bronx, NY abt 1915 Daughter
Peter Destefano Achille Destefano,
Giovina Destefano Bronx, Bronx, NY abt 1919 Son
If it is then this record from the 1920 census might be interesting.
Name: Peter Destefano
Age: 1 month
Estimated birth year: abt 1919
Birthplace: New York
Race: White
Home in 1920: Brooklyn Assembly District 3, Kings, New York
Sex: Male
Marital status: Single
Relation to Head of House: Grandson
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Father's Birth Place: Italy

If it is the right family - then this child is living in his grandfathers house which might be significant. I can't see the image - only the index.

Hi,
Very few Italian vital records are available online. That is why it's impostant to know the town of origin.....the records are kept at the town level.
The LDS (Mormans) have filmed the vital records for the town of Colledimacine, only for 1809-1865, so you will need to write for birth acts, marriage acts, & death acts not included on the films.
Here is the address to write.
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Cumune di Colledimacine
66010 COLLEDIMACINE (CH)
ITALY or ITALIA
Letter should be in Italian, include a self addressed return envelope, a copy of your photo ID & an international reply coupon (obtain from your local post office, it covers the return postage fee).
Once you get your family back to use the LDS films, here is the link to the films available.
Vital records 1809-1865
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... ato+civile++
Link to locate your local FHC.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... t_fhlc.asp
Films are rented through your local FHC for abt. $5.50/5.75 for a month (can be renewed). They take abt 4 to 6 wks to come from SLC, Utah. Once at your local FHC, they should have all the equipment to view & copy the records.
Hope this helps.

Hi Nuccia
Think of it as 'power napping' and not sleeping. Anyway - being at least partially Italian we are genetically pre-progammed to take a siesta

Nah - if its not the same one there is no point. Thanks for looking at it anyway. It was a bit of a longshot - I couldn't find Achille, so I tried the baby instead. nevermind1920 census for Peter..I can't connect the two families...he's not the same Peter as in the 1930 census. Re: Parents of Bernardino DiStefano
Thank you all for your help.
Marisa6 got all the correct info.
Achille Destefano Giovina Destefano Bronx, Bronx, NY abt 1886 Italy Head
Giovina Destefano Achille Destefano Bronx, Bronx, NY abt 1886 Wife
In fact I have been using a family tree program and have a web site at this address:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/us ... index.html
"Pete" is really Bernardino, named after Achille's father. I've been talking to my aunt Josephine, who is also listed on the census sheet. She can't go further back than her grandfather, Bernardino and that is why I'm looking for this next step. She'd love it if I could break through this wall.

I don't think this is my Great Grandfather. I know he was in the Italian Army in WW I, but I don't know of any relatives or trips to Rochester. He tended to visit relatives in PA and eventually settled in the Bronx.nuccia wrote:For starters,
