No Greece after all
No Greece after all
I just now saw my updated DNA estimates from Ancestry. Very disappointed to see the Greece/Albania estimate was removed. I assumed that it came from the Italian side of my family. And after reading about Greeks living in Italy for such a long time, I thought for sure we had a little Greek in our family. Just venting. Thanks for listening.

Don't get too invested in Ancestry's matrix. My 'old' ethnic mix matched up much more closely to my documented family tree than the new one does.AmandaP wrote: ↑24 Sep 2021, 03:14 I just now saw my updated DNA estimates from Ancestry. It's not that there aren't incorrect ethnicities per se, but their percentages & ethnic mixtures with this latest update are WAY off.
The mixture I have now shows ethnicities that I have no documentation for, and took away several that I DID have documentation for. I wouldn't be terribly concerned.
Of all the matrices I've uploaded to (you can download your results and upload them to sites like FTDNA, MyHeritage, GEDMATCH, and a host of others), Ancestry has been the LEAST accurate. Those other matrices (at least for me) were MUCH closer in ethnic breakdown to what I have on paper. I might also suggest taking the 23&me test as well.
Good luck and don't despair -- Ancestry doesn't give me any Greek either, but almost every other matrix does...

Have any of your extended family members been tested?

I'd be relieved.

Re: No Greece after all
Same happened to my boyfriend's ancestry results (born in Australia to southern Italian parents). His Greek/Albania percentage was removed and it's now majority Southern Italy, with about 9% Anatolia and the Caucasus, and 2% Cyprus. Thing is, I haven't found anyone in his tree born outside of Italy (yet). So I feel like it's accurate for him.
Researching the following:
From Basilicata: D'Amato, Caruso, Pinto, Montano, Logiodice, Bonadies
From Calabria: Natale, Cartisano, Valenzisi, Pentimalli, Minasi

Re: No Greece after all
Hi there! Yes, some have tested and had Greece/Albania. All different %'s. I noticed the men all had higher %'s than the women did. I went back and checked, and it seems anyone with 5-15% Greece/Albania, lost it in the new update. So I'm not sure what happened. I had assumed given the history, the Greece ethnicity was accurate and thought it was cool Ancestry could go back that far.
Can I ask why you would be relieved?? Not trying to start an argument or anything

Hello! I did upload to MyHeritage, low and behold, they gave me Greece and West Asia (Middle East). They're break down seems a little more accurate but I know to take these test with grain of salt. I'm waiting for 23&Me to go on sale so I can test with them next. I've hear they give regions within the country. But after 23&Me, I think my journey with DNA genealogy will come to an end, at least for awhileMarcuccioV wrote: ↑24 Sep 2021, 04:51Don't get too invested in Ancestry's matrix. Re: No Greece after all
23 & me was much more accurate for me, based on my research. Another good one to upload to is DNA.LAND. I uploaded BOTH my Ancestry & 23 & me profiles to all the other matrices (matrix plural).AmandaP wrote: ↑12 Oct 2021, 03:08

They both gave generally the same results, but with differences. The reason is they don't all read the same SNP's.
And yes, 23 & me gave me 5 regions within Italy...
Good luck on your future journey of discovery..!
