Help Reading Birthplace
Help Reading Birthplace
Greetings! Happy to be part of this community. My first post.
I've been researching my ancestors from Campania/Avellino, generally from the communities of Atripalda, Sant'Angelo Dei Lombardi, Nusco, and Montella.
I cannot read the attached birthplace and appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Re: Help Reading Birthplace
Hi and welcome to the Forum.
Can you please post the full document for us to look at. There is only one town I can think of at the moment starting with an "O" in Campania that it could be, but I have my doubts. (It's quite possibile that the town isn't in Campania.) We need to look at the full document to be sure. Thank you.

It could possibily be Orta Nova, Foggia, but it would still be good to look at the document. Thanks.

Dear Angela,
Thank you so much for your considerate reply. I hadn't thought about your suggestion at all - and completely see the possibility or Orta Nova in Provincia di Foggia. Thank you I'll try to look into it (happily) although I know the Foggia records aren't easily accessible online. (from whatI understand). I really enjoy the process, discovery, and learning- even when I reach a dead end.
I'm searching for the birthplace of my Great Great Grandfather (Nicola Carino) - The attached record is a marriage record (from the Montella registry for 1882 -it's the first record and the date/year has been cleverly modified to the correct year of 1882).
( https://www.antenati.san.beniculturali. ... _id=554699 )-Page 4
I have birth records of his wife (my great great grandmother) as well as their children. I even have records for his parents (Sant'Angelo Dei Lombardi) and his siblings. All of his siblings were born in Atripalda and I might assume he's firstborn - probably around 1858-1861.
Can't thank you enough - I'll attach some snaps of the Marriage record in case it leads to something. (if and when you have a moment. And a Happy New Year Angela!

Thank you for your heart-warming reply here, and also for posting the marriage record. You've made my day!!!
I notice that at the time of the marriage, Nicola was living in Nusco, along with his parents Giuseppe Carino and Rosaria Augerino? I searched in both Nusco and Montella for the Marriage Pubblications in the hope that they would shed some more light, but unfortunately the relevant years for each town (1881 - Montella and 1882 - Nusco) were missing. (The marriage record notes that the pubblications were posted in both Nusco and Montella.) I’m 99% sure that Nicola was born in Orta Nova, Foggia, but unfortunately the records for Orta Nova are yet to be placed on the antenati site, and as Pippo has said, they are only available for viewing via Family Search, by visiting one of their sites.
Nicola was 23 in 1882 when he married so born circa 1859. In which town was Rosaria Augerino born, and do you have her marriage record?

Re: Help Reading Birthplace
From the above marriage record: Rosolina Varallo was 28 yo, born/residing in Montella, the daughter of Silvestro Varallo, and of Concetta Ciociola, who both resided in Montella.
Here is Rosolina’s Birth Record in case you don’t have it: https://iiif-antenati.san.beniculturali ... efault.jpg
I thought it interesting that the surname Ciociola is a name which appears mainly in Foggia, so it’s quite possible that Rosolina’s mother was also from Foggia???

Re: Help Reading Birthplace
Well Angela, goodness, Thank you back. I'm still wearing the smile you gave me!
I had the birth record for Rosolina (thank you) but had only done a little research on her parents. Likewise, for Nicola Carino's mother, I don't have recored for Ansevino(Anzevino) but I've only searched Avellino records - so I'll gladly expand my horizons. I guess there are no dead ends and there's always another path to skip down.
I have US records that show Rosolina visited? the US in 1912 to visit my great grandfather/and infant grandfather - they state that she lived in Montella with her husband. After that I'm not sure and I don't have a record of her death.
I'll pass on any news to my soon to be 80 year old mother (Rosolina's great granddaughter) - who still lives just steps from her grandfather's former home.
I'll keep searching Angela. Here's hoping it's a lovely day!

I wanted to verify the correct spelling of Rosaria's surname because in the marriage record posted here it isn't so clear, at all, and I also couldn't see any evidence of the surname Augerino, which is what I was reading (whoops). Anyways, after reviewing the birth records of the children I believe the surname is Anzevino, which is a name found in Avellino.
All the best with your search and let us know how you get on.

Re: Help Reading Birthplace
I was researching at a Family Search Affiliate Library yesterday, and while there searched for and located Nicola's Birth Record. Yes, born in Orta Nova. Here are the details and hopefully I'll be able to post an image of the record as well. It's not the clearest though.
Birth Act No 45: Nicola Fedele Carino
Registered: 22 March 1858 in Orta (Nova)
Baptised the same day Santa Maria la Grazie
Appearing was Giuseppe Carino, son of the deceased Nicola Carino, 22 yo, Cocchiere (a coachman), living in Orta, Strada Foggia, to present a baby boy born on 20 March 1858, from Rosaria Anzevino (but looks like Anzivino, as written in Foggia), his legitimate wife, 17 yo, living with him, and from himself, the declarant, details as above. The baby was given the name Nicola Fedele.

Re: Help Reading Birthplace
Angela. I -am -absolutely -floored. You have made my year! You have no idea how long I've searched for this - happily - but still. Unbelievable. I had been meaning to write to you about Anzivino - but I've had a terribly busy week - what a surprise to open this. The 'Family' libraries aren't convenient to me. This fills a major hole in my records- so you deserve all the credit. My mother will get your gift next.
I think we all find the joy in learning about history, geography, ourselves and more in this work.
On another note, I find the changes in spelling of surnames very intriguing (attribute some of it to the times and people) but for example - the surname Carino often appears as Carrino on birth records, sometimes changing among siblings. As well, the geographical aspect of certain surnames. I'll go back to work now feeling invigorated. I'm sure will meet in our respective inboxes - I've got another side of the family from Palermo as well - and have done very little on that front
Enjoy you day Angela,
Jon
