My G Grandfather - Apostles Lambert??

Post by golliver »

Hi, Looking for some help here. Have come to a brick wall in my research as my g-grandfather - Apostle/s Lambert may have changed his name or it may have beeen anglicized by an errant recorder when he came to NZ around 1872/1874 possibly via Australia. He was born in Nice in 1852 according to his first marriage certificate or 1854 in Naples according to his second marriage certificate. We believe Nice is more likely to be correct as we have always been told he was northern Italian. Family stories say that he was a bodyguard to Guiseppe Garibaldi, but it would have had to have been in the latter part of Garibaldi's life, probably after he retired. His mothers maiden name is recorded as being Elizabeth Laltans and His father recorded as Peter Lambert on his first marriage certificate. He settled in Parematta in NZ along with other fishermen around 1879. Other fishermen who settled in the area at the same time have the surnames of Barberer, Baretly, Gestro, Lama, Parris, Vella and Vello. I would be grateful for any help I can get. Thank You. Gail

Hi Gail,

Here are some great websites from New Zealand. I hope some of them are a help to you.

The National Archives in New Zealand www.archives.govt.nz/holdings/immigration_frame.html

Archives New Zealand Head Office Wellington holds passenger lists for nearly all ships arriving in New Zealand for the period 1883-1973. On arrival in New Zealand, ships handed formal Passenger Lists to a customs officer.

The Social Security Department used these Passenger Lists to check people's eligibility for old age pensions. They are referred to as the Social Security passenger lists.

Another source could be the Library in Christchurch NZ, who also maintain Passenger Lists

Thanks Trish, I will double check all the sites you mentioned however, I've pretty much exhausted the NZ end of his life. Maybe some one could recommend a historian who has done extensive research on Garibaldi. There may be some references to aqaintences, employees, friends, etc of Garibaldi after he retired. Cheers, gail

Hi Gail
I realise it is a number of years since you posted on here re your great grandfather Apostle Lambert but I have just started researching my husbands family tree.
His Great grandfather was Apostle Lambert on his fathers maternal side.
His father was Trevor Sydney William Herbert Palmer whose mother was May Elizabeth Lambert. One of Apostle's daughters.
He was known as Apostle Lambert (no name change) and lived Paremata, Porirua, Wellington.
He married Annie Aplin in 1881 till 1890. He then married Jane Emma (Barry) Lambert in 1891.
On his marriage certificate to Annie he states his length of residence in NZ is 5 years? which makes his arrival to be 1886, but his death certificate says he had been in NZ for 30 years which makes his arrival 1872?
He appears to have been illiterate as he signed his marriage certificate with an X. The certificate also states his mothers name was Elizabeth Laltans.
There is apparently a family story that Apostle may have been a follower of Garibaldi, but I have found no evidence of this.
Apostle is always recorded as a fisherman.
He first appears in the Wise's NZ post office directories at Paremata in 1897, but he was living at Paremata in 1887 when a newspaper reported his being taken to court for not supporting his wife Annie and children.
Hope this is of some help.
Kind regards
Yvonne Palmer
