Hello all,
Does anyone know why a surname would be changed from Licusati to Cusati? I just discovered this today, for my GGGGF; he was born and married as Salvatore Licusati, but is listed on his death certificate, children's birth and death certificates and children's marriage documents as Salvatore Cusati. I am aware surnames did commonly change, as I have seen the change of a vowel or adding a double consonant, but this change seems more significant.
Thank you for your insight.

Perhaps the surname comes from the locality "Licusati = Li Cusati". "Li" is the article.

According to Google Translate, licusati is a word meaning licensed.
I suppose it could have been Li' Cusati.
