Bacciarelli, Delora & Gardellor

I'm trying to find information on my grandfathers family who originated in Gero or Gera, near Como, Lombardy, Italy. My great grandfather Giovanni Battista Bacciarelli born Dec 1866 in Gero and his brother Guiseppe Bacciarelli born c 1864/5 came over to England in the late 1800's and I would be interested in hearing from any living relatives in the UK and Italy. Giovanni was married twice, his first wife was Silvia Gardellor and they had at least one son with possibly 3 other children before she and their fifth child Emma died during childbirth. Giovanni then married my gr grandmother Leah Dunn and owned a restaurant in Essex along with his partner Antonio Mastaglio for several years before he died in 1937. Leah later remarried Walter Rogers, a naval man who may have also been previously married.

Giovanni (who was known by the family as Battista) and Guiseppe's parents were Anthonio Bacciarelli and Mavora Delora although the mothers name in our current records may be a pet name rather than the true birth name. Antonio's occupation is listed as a farmer in 1891 and a fishermonger in 1900. Date and places of birth unknown.

The Bacciarelli surname has been spelled in a variety of ways but my gr grandfather (who was literate), signed his name many times it as it is written here. A visit to Gero by a close family member established that no Bacciarelli's remain in the locality although there may be some living relations in other areas of Italy as well as the UK.

I am especially interested in any information on Antonio and Mavora's parentage and other siblings of Giovanni and Guiseppe. Would be most grateful if anyone has any information on my ancestors and welcome contact from extended family members researching the family tree.

If anyone is able to do any lookups for me in the region, please respond to this post. I am hoping to visit Lombardy later this year but am unable to speak or read Italian so would appreciate help!

Hi, My grandfather came form Italy in 1904 aged 14 from Italy, possiblt Tusscany/massa/pisa/lombardy
His name Francesco Guiseppi Bellerine (possibley Bellani) but he changed it to Frank Bell when he got here.
His father I believe was Battista Guiseppi.
Frank married Sarah Palosi & lived in kenndel.

The spellings of the names may not be correc but if you think there is any connection id love to hear from you.

I don't have any record of Bellerine, Bellani, Palosi or Bell in our tree but then again I'm still in early stages!! Don't think there is a connection but will be happy to share info if I find anything relevent

You have an interesting family history. I saw the Bacciarelli UK website. Are the names Pasquale Bacciarelli, Louis Phillip Bacciarelli or Rosa Newar familiar? Are the surnames Webb or Moughvella anywhere in your family tree? How about Bathita Bacciarelli? If these names are not familiar, let me know.

There seem to be a number of possible name changes or variations in your family. The name Delora is an english variation of the name Dolores. In Italian it would be Delfina, (surname Delfino). There were Deloras that went to the U.S., however, all were from Essen, Germany.
The name Gardellor could also be a variation of the surnames Gardella, Gardello or Gardelli. In Italy, all 3 of these variations can be found within the same families.

FYI - There is a Polish-to-U.S. connection with the Bacciarelli surname; most likely descendants of the artist, Marcello Bacciarelli.

Bathita Bacciarelli is my gr grandfather, his full name is Giovanni Battista but it was written Bathita on some documentation. He was always known as Battista by the family and the correct spelling (according to him) is Battista. Even my folks were not aware that he was called Giovanni until we found his ID card in my nan's effects! The card was filled out and signed by him in his own handwriting so we know that it is correct although true that the spelling of his mother's and first wife's maiden name and his own name may be suspect.

Pasquale and Louis Phillip Bacciarelli and Rose Newar are familiar although I have yet to find the connection - mum says all she was told that all the Bacciarelli's in the UK are related to us. I think they are most likely descendents of my gr grandfather and his first wife Silva or of his brother Guiseppe. I'm sure there was at least one other sibling who came over to the UK although I haven't found the documentation to prove that yet.

Webb and Moughvella may be in our family tree, however they are definately in the John Anthony Bacciarelli family tree who I am sure is a relation but haven't made the link yet (am sending off for certificates). I spoke to one of the relations via email who gave me this information but the nephew who is author of the tree hasn't responded to my queries and without knowing who John's parents/grandparents were, it's difficult to make the connection.

Delora is definately a surname (Mavora Delora) and she never came to England. She was Giovanni and Guiseppe's mother who was born and lived in Italy along with their father Antonio Bacciarell. I don't know for certain where the parents were born but they lived in Gera/Gero near the Swiss border which is where the boys were born.

I have found some instances of Delora in Italy, usually listed as De Lora although no idea if this is the same family.

Thanks for the Gardellor info, I suspected the spelling might have been a variation as have found no other instances of it but was unsure of the likely variations to pursue. My family were under the impression that Silvia died in Italy before gr grandfather came to England but my research has established that wasn't the case. They had at least 4 children before she died in childbirth with daughter Emma.

I am aware of the Polish to US connection and am a member of the Bacciarelli.com website but am in the UK and trying to trace the lines here and in Italy first LOL.

Your response indicates you may have some knowledge or connection to the Bacciarelli's?? I would love to hear more and would be happy to share off list if you prefer.

Since my last posting I have made some small headway by ordering the Gera Lario films. I found my gr grandfather Giovanni Battista Bacciarelli's birth listing in 1866 which revealed that his father Antonio was a 40 year old illiterate fisherman when my gr grandfather was born and that there was at least older two siblings, Giuseppe and one called Girolamo after their grandfather.

The document also revealed that his mother Mavora Delora's name was spelt Dell'Oro and her fathers name was Antonio Carlo Delphi Dell'Oro. I have subsequently found this name spelt as Dall'Oro and Dall'Orr or Dell'Orr.

According to a user submitted record on the IGI site, the Dell'Oro name can be found in the Como region as far back as the 1600/1700's so I would be interested in hearing from anyone else looking into this name.
