Tomasso di Giacomo Death Record

Post by cjs1218 »

Good afternoon, I am looking for a death record for Tomasso di Giacomo who lived in Cellino Attanasio. According to his son Domenicantonio's marriage records, him and his wife had both passed away before the marriage. I have a death record for his wife, Angela Rosa Canulli which said he was still alive when she passed. I looked in all records between 1817 (Angela Rosa's death year) and 1834 (their son's marriage year) and I had no luck. The strange thing is that a copy of Angela's death record is in her son's processetti records but not Tomasso's.

For reference:
1834 marriage of son

This indicates that Domenicantonio was born in San Giacomo, Atri. I looked through the Atri death indices from 1817-1834 with no luck (though 1818 had no index).

For what it's worth, I've seen many examples in this part of Italy where surnames are patronymic and do not always follow a pattern. For example, there could be records for Domenicantonio 'di Tommaso" instead of Domenicantonio di Giacomo. The same could go for his father, where instead of 'di Giacomo', he uses his own father's name (if it wasn't actually Giacomo).

After some digging, I found a processetti record of his son Domenicantonio di Giacomo in Cellino Attanasio. In it, it states that he "declared with his oath to ignore the place of death and that of the last residence of his father and his grandparents." I also found a death record for another son of Tomasso who's name was Pietro. It says that Tomasso's profession was a Mendico or beggar. This whole things is very strange and hopefully I can find more info by finding marriage documents for more of Tomasso's children. Thank you for the help!

The word 'ignore' in this sense means he was ignorant or had no knowledge of the place of death or last residence of his father. This would be in keeping with his being described as a beggar. He was probably buried as a 'John Doe'.
