Help with Military Record transcription

Post by CiroForenza »

This is the military record for my wife's great-grandfather. I have transcribed some, but not all of the record. The record starts when he was 18 in 1895. Although the military file continues through 1910, he left Italy in February 1903 and, to our knowledge, never returned. I would be grateful for any assistance in this transcription.

I appreciate the downloads - I know folks are reviewing this. I hope to get a few more words transcribed soon and will upload those. Kind regards, Phil

I'll get you started with the left column, which normally is the easiest to read, but of course in this case it isn't. I'll just comment on discrepancies I see and what you haven't translated:

Cappelli - colore - I'm reading "neri" yes forma is "lisci" - so straight black hair

Occhi - Tricky - possibly "grigi" grey?

Dentarua - yes Sana - healthy/good teeth

Segni particolari: can't decipher - something to do with his neck (collo)?

Arte o professione: - Carrettiere - Carrier/Cart Driver

Re the main section, first two entries - you have written "classe 1885". He was in "classe 1877" the year of his birth.

Re the third line down it says "Chiamato alle armi e giunto" (so he was called to arms and went).

Some of this may need tweaking. Others will chime in and hopefully complete it. A lot of work goes into transcribing and translating these military records because of the rough script and military terms used, (as I'm sure you are finding - well done).

Thank you!!! I knew it had to be a scar and I can see the word "Lato" clearly now. Therefore "Scar at/on the right side of the neck."

Thank you very much - grazie mille!! I sincerely appreciate the help on the left side of the document. I'm meeting a friend today to talk about other parts of the transcription. After that, I'll incorporate the comments above and my friend's transcription and repost to help others in transcribing their Italian military records.

As promised, I am attaching a more complete transcription, incorporating the comments above, those of my friend and more of my Googling. The attachment includes three pages: 1) fully transcribed left side, 2) the right side of entries of military career. I have underlined the portions not transcribed, and 3) detail of the original military record in which I've also underlined the problematic bits of text. Thank you for any and all assistance.

mmogno, thank you so very much! I gave it my best shot, but between the old script and not really knowing Italian, these missing sections were challenging. My wife and I are grateful for your help. Kind regards
