Gioia or Giosa

Post by khoney »

Can someone please help with the correct spelling of Giuseppe’s surname?

Birth record

Birth record of his son

Death of father

Of all of the records I have viewed in Chiaromonte, Potenza were the second to last letter is written as in Giuseppe’s birth record, only the surname Giosa or Gioia and the commune Noia, Potenza is written this way.

Thank you,
Karen

Thank you Mmogno that was quick!

Is there a rule regarding when an i is written like a j that I should be aware of?

Thank you.

In Old Italian, j was often used instead of i in diphthongs.
