Ventimiglia Family

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Ventimiglia Family

Post by marknakers01 »

The Ventimiglia were a noble family of Liguria and descendants of the family held positions and titles of nobility in Sicily. Would it be true to say that anyone with the surname Ventimiglia in their line in Sicily was related to and/or a descendant of this family?

No.

Abandoned babies were often given surnames of towns (usually far away) or created by fantasy. Ventimiglia also means 20,000, so if a baby was abandoned in an area known as Ventimiglia in SIcily it may be given that as a surname! Even legitimate families from that area could bear that surname. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventimiglia_di_Sicilia

While the Ventimiglia family was indeed a noble family of Liguria and held positions and titles of nobility in Sicily, it would not be accurate to assume that anyone with the surname Ventimiglia in their lineage in Sicily is directly related to or a descendant of this specific noble family. Surnames can be adopted for various reasons, such as geographic origin, occupation, or personal attributes. Therefore, individuals with the surname Ventimiglia in Sicily may have acquired the name for reasons unrelated to noble lineage or familial connection to the Ventimiglia family of Liguria. Genealogical research and documentation would be necessary to establish a direct ancestral link to the noble Ventimiglia family.
