if my research into my maternal line has done anything, it has created more confusion than clarity.
Utilizing Civil records (all that is available for the home commune in Lazio) from 1871-on, I can find no documented relatives from outside of the commune. My DNA indicates deeper roots from various regions to the south and east.
This is reinforced by speech dialects, food traditions, etc. This has prompted me to look deeper into how these anomalies came to be. One of the discoveries I stumbled upon was the subject of "burini" (rural farmers who emigrated into the Roman countryside where they worked as sharecroppers and other trades). They originally came from Emiglia Romagna (I have no DNA history there), but included emigres from other regions.
I believe this explains a lot of the confusing elements I have found thus far, as all my forebears seem to have been uneducated and illiterate contadini (my direct grandparents excepted).
Has anyone else found such a history in their family tree or research..?

Hi Mark,
The fact that your DNA shows roots from an enlarged area doesn't surprise me.
I don't remember if I mentioned this when we met.
Norma, my wife, is from a village in the province of Viterbo.
I could trace her ancestors back to the early 1600, thanks to the Church registers of her Parish.
Well, if I consider only relatives who were born after 1850, they were all from such village of from very near villages; that means more than 150 years of marriages inside a small area.
Nevertheless, going back two more centuries, I found relatives coming from Marche, Umbria, Toscana, Romagna, Kingdom of Naples and Swiss.
So, deeper search may have surprises for you!

I really enjoyed our meeting/dinner with you and Norma. Too bad we only had such a limited time together.PippoM wrote: 03 Dec 2023, 18:18 Hi Mark,

My deeper roots based on DNA appear to tied to Abruzzo, Campania, Puglia and Sicilia. Little to nothing in any of the other regions. Traces of Greek and Cypriot occur in small percentages also (under 5% each)...

Have you considered reverse engineering?
Searching for those with a deep paper trail in Abruzzo, Campania, Puglia and Sicilia but with surprising DNA matches from greater Rome for which they can't account?

It's a worthwhile attempt, but that would take a time commitment that I don't have (at least for the moment).darkerhorse wrote: 04 Dec 2023, 04:22 Have you considered reverse engineering?

I've tried researching a few closer DNA matches, but no luck so far...
