Looking for Family in Nicastro

Post by baaiello »

Hello,

I have long been interested in finding my family in Italy. Our family in the United States had previously had contact with them - but after my grandmothers sisters died, we have no record of their names.

We do have a strong Birthday to go off of for Antonio Tropea - Born in Nicastro Italy on October 21, 1897.

Antonio we know had a brother (The name Fernando has been said but uncertain) who to our knowledge stayed in Italy and never immigrated to the US.

Antonio's brother (we can stick with Fernando for now) had 4 daughters. This is part of what has made our search so difficult. To my grandmothers knowledge our family sent over 4 wedding dresses for all of the daughters when they were getting married. Therefore it is safe to assume our relatives today would have 4+ different last names at this point depending on children from their marriages.

I am new to the world of genealogy searching. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

My thought process would be:

- Locate the Birth Certificate for Antonio Tropea - Nicastro Italy, October 31, 1897
- Confirm the names of his Parents
- Confirm the name of his brother through his brothers Birth Certificate
- Locate the Birth and Marriage Certificates for his 4 daughters
- Locate the Birth and Marriage Certificates for their children as far as can be traced.

THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Apologies for the confusion above:

the correct birthday for Antonio Tropea is October 21, 1897 - I stated it incorrectly towards the end.

The 21st not the 31st

I can't find registers online for Nicastro after 1860! :(

That is part of my road block as well @PippoM

I have been able to backtrace a few generations of NAMES only based on US Birth Certificates on Ancestry.com - But I have not been able to leverage those names into anything tangible in Catenzaro/Nicastro yet.

I attempted to reach out to the Diocese of Lamezia Terme, with no success yet.

Since the on-line records for Nicastro don't cover your search, there are some work-arounds that might help.

1. you might try contacting directly the Tropeas living there. The "Pagine Blanche" website https://www.paginebianche.it/persone?qs ... tro%20(CZ) finds a couple dozen. Others in this forum can help you put together your inquiry.

2. you might trace back as best you can through USA records of known relatives, starting with your own direct lineage. Which people are known to have immigrated? Where did they live (if Pittsbugh you are in luck) - can they be found on census or other documents? That means it's time to provide some names, places, dates to work with here.

Looking at immigration, here is a list of Nicastro Tropeas who passed through Ellis Island (too lazy to format a screenshot, so it is parsed). Antonio who came in 1910 seems to be the prime suspect, going to his uncle Giuseppe (who came in 1903) in Pittsburgh. The Lombardia and the Montserrat carry family groups. Give a shout out if you're unfamiliar with finding and extracting information from these ship manifests.

1-Tropea, Angela- 1 Nov 22 1901 Lombardia
2- Tropea, Antonio- 28 Jul 11 1906 Montserrat
3- Tropea, Antonio- 13 Mar 20 1910 Batavia
4- Tropea, Carmela 32 Sep 09 1905 Konigin Luise
5- Tropea, Carmela 27 Nov 22 1901 Lombardia
6- Tropea, Carmeta 32 Nov 09 1905 Konig Albert
7- Tropea, Domenico 24 Nov 19 1902 Aller
8- Tropea, Francesco 23 May 18 1903 Duca di Galliera
9- Tropea, Giuseppe 36 Apr 17 1903 Citta di Milano
10- Tropea, Maria 5 1895-1896 Nov 22 1901 Lombardia
11- Tropea, Pasquale 2 Jul 11 1906 Montserrat
12- Tropea, Teresa 38 May 10 1915 Duca d'Aosta
13- Tropea, Vincenzo 30 Sep 03 1913 Mendoza
14- Tropea, Vincenzo 1 Jul 11 1906 Montserrat

Good luck, Parker
