help with birthdate

Post by babbott »

Can someone double-check these documents to confirm when my ancestor Rocco Malfa was born? I'm pretty sure it says January 27, 1883, but I saw somewhere else where it said January 22, 1883. I'm not sure if maybe one was the actual birthdate and the other was when it was recorded/registered since I guess it will state that in the birth record (but I can't read the writing from the book copy). Thanks!

Date of birth was 22 January 1883 and the registration took place on 27 January 1883 as you suggested.

Did you catch the content of the annotation in the left column:
It is not very clear but I believe it says that he marries 13 March 1907 (13/3/1907) in Terranova with Giovanna Sigona

(It has been written Giovanna but the following marriage record says Giovannina as you have said.)

oh wow sigh of relief. If you don't mind, where exactly does it say the 22? Because I thought it said 27 in his stato civile for marriage records and I was confused.

Looking at the original civil birth record, on line eight you will read
"minuti ________ del di ventidue (ie twenty-two) del corrente mese nella casa posta in ...."

Looking at the hand written Birth Extract you have posted, which should be a verbatim copy of the original birth record, in this case the date of birth will be written on the second page which you haven't posted. If it does say twenty-seven, ignore it. It will be a clerical error. You can post the second page if you like and I'll take a look to see what is written. Either way, it is the original birth record that will be correct. There is no date correction there.

Edit to Add:

When you say "his stato civile for marriage records" what do you mean exactly? You may be referring to the allegati, also called processetti, which are the marriage attachments - ie documents like the groom's Birth Extract that you have posted here, which were required to be presented before a marriage could take place.

I believe these are the next 2 pages for the written out version.

It is also written "(born) ventidue del corrente mese" i.e. 22 of the current month. So date of birth is definitely 22 January 1883.
