Italian Ancestors who migrated to Russia in 1870's and then returned to Italy.

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Italian Ancestors who migrated to Russia in 1870's and then returned to Italy.

Post by canavese1879 »

Basically two of my Italian ancestors were born in Castellamonte in 1836 and 1845. The next record I have of them is a death record of their child in 1878 in Castellamonte at age 6 months old. However, it lists his birth date as Halina or Kalina, Russia. (image is attached). It does say the father was an impresario so that could explain why they travelled to Russia but I would be keen to find out more about why Italians might have gone to Russia in that time period and how to find records of their child's birth in Russia. I also know they had another child in Russia as he later emigrated to the USA as an adult. Most of his records list his birth as the Soviet Union or Russia, nationality as Italian and have a birth date of around the 1st February 1874.

I don't know where exactly Kalina is, but you might be interested in this:

This is interesting thank you. However, all the records do specify Russia, from the 1870s to records in the 1930's. Do you know if Odessa was known in the USA/Italy as a part of Russia or Russian Empire at that time? I have struggled to find maps that show the boundaries of Russia during this time period.

According to Wikipedia, Odessa was a part of Russian Empire since 1792.
The only time frame when there is some uncertainty is between 1917 and 1920, when it taken and lost by various armies.
