Occardi - Sarzana, Spezia

Post by danimcg123 »

Hi,

Doing a friend's family tree for them as a gift and looking for some help as I have hit a block trying to find records for her husband's ancestor. His name was Valerio Occardi born 16 November 1889 in Sarzana, Spezia. This is on his naturalisation certificate as he moved to Scotland sometime before 1920. I have been told he was a soldier during WW1 and was possibly an orphan as I can find no information on his parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in trying to find records for Sarzana in general please or even some information on the name Occardi which I now believe could potentially be a foundling name.

Kind regards,

Dani

I wasn't able to find any record online for Sarzana.
Maybe someone else knows where to look?

Hi,

No worries Pippo thank you for trying I don appreciate it! Apparently what I have found so far from what the family kept one of his daughters found out he was Lieutenant in the army (either Italian or British unknown) in WW1 and the place of the orphange he grew up in was in Sarzana close to La Spetzia this is unfortunately all I have in terms of information

There also seems to be a rumor from one of his daughters that he fled the Italian Army and came across on a boat to the UK so potentially Occardi isn't even his real surname

You could try to contact the State Archive of La Spezia for his military documents. (Liste di leva/Liste di estrazione)
Apparently they answer requests by post/email.
You need a date of birth (you got that) and to send a copy of you ID.

The don’t keep the Ruoli Matricolari.
They are available partly in the state archive of Massa and partly in the state archive of Genova.

This is the list present in Massa. I only looked in the year 1889 but he’s not there.

That’s fine Dani.
If you wish, let us know if you find something.
Obviously, another path you can follow is to contact the municipality directly, which you may have already done.
