Casaretti from Chiavari area
Casaretti from Chiavari area
I have been researching my family lineage for about 3 years. Casaretti is my grandmothers side. Her parents were Nicholas Casaretti and wife Luisa Vacari Casaretti. Per their death certificates both were born in 1852 and came to the USA in 1869, also the year they were married. Their brother, Anthony b. 1849 came to USA in 1887 with wife Maggie V? These two brothers were both candy makers and many of their children also became candy makers. They settled in the Rochester NY area. Their parents were Luigi Casaretti and Katherine Sanguiri.
All the death certificates say they were from Chiavari, Italy. Looking on a map, I found a hamlet a couple of miles outsde of Chiavari called Casaretti.
We are planning a trip to research this better to Chiavari sometime in 2007. I am even taking Italian lessons to prepare for this. I really feel i am entering the unknown and do not know how to continue. I would love to find their immigration records, ship, church in Italy, etc. Just as much as I could before we take the trip.
I would also appreciate any advice for the trip. Where to stay, how to get around, were to visit, what to contact before we depart,, is there help available in Italy?.
Most of the data I have is from death certificates, US Census, etc. I have found some stange things which make me question things. There are variations on the spelling - probably changes for whatever reason. One of the sons of Nicholas "changed" his name to CASARIETTI, maybe a mistake as he learned to write English. Another branch simply dropped the "i" making it Casarett. I have a total of 39 Casaretti's and variations mention here in my tree with maybe 10-12 more living soon to be added.
I am so proud of my Italian heritage. There are recipes for candy still around as well as ravioli. They started many businesses in the area which survive in some form to this day. Many of the descendants are in medicine, science, and art. Any help or guidance would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Here is the official website for the comune of Chiavari. You can request birth, marriage, & death acts from them. Requests should be in Italian. It also has other information that may help with your trip.

Re: Casaretti from Chiavari area
Thanks again. i am having a lot of trouble finding out what happened to Anthony (Antonio). He does not appear in any US Census except 1900! Yet, through evidence like the manifest you shared shows he was alive and a US Citizen. His wife, Maggie, is also missing. Maybe they did go back to Italy. I do show his business, the Rochester Candy Works, was in business up until 1910 at least (though I can not yet say for certain that he owned it). So that is one area I need help.nuccia wrote:Glad these are the persons you were searching for! Let us know if theres anything else we can help you with!

I still need to find time to contact Italy, probably through the church in Chiavari. I need also to contact the Roman catholic church here in Rochester to see if their records are accessible.
Thanks

Good morning..
Just checking in..went up North yesterday and didn't get in until after 2 last night. Yes, the 1910 census is horrible. Not sure if I can make it any clearer but I will try later on today.

Re: Casaretti from Chiavari area
Thanks to all who have helped out (and this has been great help). I am meeting a relative for the 1st time on Tuesday....a third cousin. I hope she can do some leg work. I have found out that Anthony started the Rochester Candy Works in the 1890's. There were so many candy makers in the family.
Thanks for all the help

Re: Casaretti from Chiavari area
I have contacted a 3rd cousin who I did not know and I have also written to Chiavari, Italy. I have several other 3rd cousins and the like to contact. Great fun. Wish me luck. Your help has been great...now I need to make some progress on the Italian side of the ocean.
I found two hamlets in Italy named "Casaretti". One is only a couple miles east of Chiavari and the 2nd is near to Parma. Is there a chance these hamlets are somehow related to my lineage? How would I find out?
Thanks again to all who have helped. This site is the best!

About the other town....Anything's possible. I found several of my family married into families of neighbouring hamlets so you won't know until you actually research it.
Out of curiousity, have you researched the microfilm available (if it is available..sorry, I didn't check) of the towns? This may be a great avenue for you to try.
You're right...this is a very good forum and I hope it continues to stay that way. Its the wonderful posters who make it so special.
