AI and You

Post by darkerhorse »

Has anybody tried asking AI about genealogy?

If so, I'm not sure how it would work - what you would ask etc.

From AI:

In population genetics, researchers often use centuries of local residence and local admixture as informal criteria:

3–5 generations (~100–150 years) in a locality → considered locally “established”

5–10+ generations (~200–300 years) → strong local integration

Longer periods (1,000+ years) → effectively “native” in genetic studies

💡 Rule of thumb often cited:
If a paternal line has been continuously resident in Sicily for ≥5–10 generations, it is considered Sicilian — even if the Y-DNA SNP traces to another region.

Sei d'accordo?

My paternal side falls into the beginning of the middle category by paper trail. Church records for prior generations apparently aren't available. The presumed Y-DNA SNP traces to another region. How can generations of local residence be extended by other DNA testing?

Regarding that rule of thumb, I wonder if you only count your direct line or if you can count any line in your family tree. I say that because the lines for my direct family and for most of my closer relatives have died out or emigrated out. Distant cousins have remained for additional generations, but do they count as "my paternal line" or does that mean my direct line only? Either way, it's still far from "native" at least by paper trail. I wonder how DNA could factor in?

An interim update on AI.

I've found answers about genealogy to be generally helpful though most information was readily available on internet searches. AI did cite one specific relevant thing which directly applied to my family and advanced my research. AL also provided some interesting insights on DNA analysis.

Another time, after a long session on personal finances, I light-heartedly asked what grade do I get, and AI generated a detailed report card with all A's (including minuses and pluses) for each subject discussed. I'm a DIY, so maybe I just found an easer-grader or maybe I was the teacher's pet.

In another session, I stated that I thought Moe had anger issues and Larry was passive-aggressive, asking for comments. AI recognized who I meant without any prompting, fully agreed with me, and proceeded to post evidence taken from script dialogues in support. I think a real person would have just snickered at me. I'm surprised AI didn't accuse me of being passive-aggressive too.

In my opinion, how you ask is as important as what you ask.

The more I use AI the less I trust it. And both my parents were human.
