Looking for Surname - Sabbio

Post by JACOB701 »

I have been searching for years to find the information on my grandfather, Emanuel Sabbio, who came to America from Italy. He came to New York. I was able to find my grandmother who came to Ellis Island, but cannot find him on the Ellis Island website. The spelling of his name I am sure is different than the English version. Every place I go, they want money, and no guarantee that it is the right person. Can you direct me someplace to get this information or a start.

Also I would like some history on my Italian grandparents.

Thanks for any help.

You can start here... we're pretty reasonable..

We can try to locate a manifest, census records, military info... but you need to provide more info..

Year of birth...

Name of wife... married here... there...

Siblings...

Where settled....

What American records do you already have, if any...?

That would be him. Wow you are amazing. Even got his Draft records. You got more information in 5 minutes than I could get in two years which was nothing.

What else can you get. How did he get to this country, I can't find any records on his arrival? I always said, he must have been a stowaway. LOL
I have no clue where he was born.
How far back can we go? Are there records on his parents and such? What is available?

Wow, thanks, I am so excited.

You sure are digging up all the information. He had three children, Emanuel was my father, and Margaret and Mary my aunts. Mary died quite young.

I noticed the spellings are different, probably why I wasn't able to find out anything. You sure were able to access their NY records. Figured my grandfather became a citizen. I don't think my Grandmother ever did, and she never learned how to speak English. She stayed home in her little neightborhood of Italians, and her children. You still can't find anything about his access to the United States? Weird. Thanks for everything you have gotten so far, at least I know when he was born. Never knew that. Wish there was somewhere to get into the Italian Records in Italy. Have no clue where he was born. You are great, all the information that you have gotten. Thanks again.

Yes we have come a long way in such a short time. Just that one thing we can't find. Like I said he must have been a stow-away. LOL

My grandfather had three children. My father, Emanuel Joseph Victor Sabbio born Jan 2, 1909. Delivered by a midwife. Then there was an older sister, Mary, who died while she was in her twenty's (I think) I don't know too much about her. Then my aunt, Marguerite, married name was Hill. Lived in NY too, died a couple of years ago. She was younger than my father.

Hopefully we can get the info on how he got here and where he was born in Italy... But we have gotten alot so far. Again much thanks for all you have done.

Well... long-shot time?

Here's an "Emanuele Sapio" (it's trascribed in the database as "Emanneli", but it looks like Emanuele to me) arriving at Ellis Island in 1906:

He's 27, so the ages would match. He's single at that time, and travelling to a brother named Filippo.

I'm interested: where's your grandmother's manifest?

This is the info I got off of Ellis Island on my grandmother, but can't see the manifest, to know any more details.

Her name on the manifest was: Guiseppa Riggio, from Palerimo, departed from Napoli, 11/22/1901. on the ship Lombardia. That is how the Italians spelled Josephine I guess.

That sounds right about the spelling of the name as I guess that is how the Italians spelled Emanuel. I know my father who also was Emanuel, had a hard time proving he was a male when he went into the service, as the Midwife had his name spelled with an e or an a at the end and the military thought he was a female due to the spelling. Had to contact the midwife to prove that was him. LOL Let me know if you find her too. We're getting closer. Thanks.

Is there a way to see the actual manifest, or do they have it blocked out, so you will have to purchase it.

Is this the manifest you're speaking of:

http://tinyurl.com/hkfv8

You should be able to look at this one. Looks like your "Guiseppa" (or Giuseppa) was travelling with a sister, Maria Stella (not sure about that second name) and they were both going to a sister, Antonina, in New York.
