Nonini FamilY - Lombardy Region

Post by historybuff1964 »

I am looking for information on my family - NONINI - from the Lombardy region of Italy. I know that my grandfather Giovanni "John" Nonini came to America in the late 1800's and met and married my grandmother Maria Molatore who's family is from the Cercino area - northern Italy (Lombardy) They married here in America in the Fresno, California, USA area. Not much is known about my grandfathers family. If anyone has any info on this family, please let me know.

Thank you,

L. Nonini
Fresno, California, USA

Nonini and Molatore are rare surnames and only present in northern Lombardy (mostly province of Sondrio). So it should be easy to find info there starting of course in Cercino. The address of the town-hall (municipio) is
Via Ligari, 2
23016 Cercino (SO)
In the Ellis Island site there's a Giovanni Nonini arriving in 1898 from Novate which I assume is Novate Mezzola in the province of Sondrio
All the Molatores arrived from Cercino, there's one Maria listed in 1913 aged 25

good luck

I thought you might like to see this....a bit misty I know...sorry - but it was taken from my balcony last winter.
It looks towards the 'other side' of the Valtellina and just behind the l/h electric pylon you can see the village of Cercino on the side of the mountain. Below, almost out of sight is Cino and to the right Mantello and Traona in the distance!

(I do have some better ones if you are interested....)

Last week I actually went to the village in question (which is very near to where I live) and took one or two photo's for Louie. I couldn't find the two photo's I had wanted to send as I think they were lost when I had a 'trojan virus' on my system a short while ago. I did not want to let him down, but having sent them via e-mail I've heard no more.... I don't know if they arrived or not. I've checked but he doesn't seem to have posted here again either. Anybody got any ideas?

Dear Elba,

I am very interested in Novato Mezzola. Any information you can send me, any pictures - i would love to receive. You know, I do appreciate all that everyone has done. This is so helping me understand so much about my fathers family. He didn't talk much about his father's family at all. And until recently, we didn't know that much about the Molatore family in Cercino. My grandmother came from there and we never had any contact with them until a cousin here in the states contacted my sister. She was a Molatore and told us why there was a "feud" in the families. It was quite interesting to know. Anyway, the more information the better.

Thank you again for all your help. I look forward to hearing from you. Maybe one day my wife, children and I can come to Italy. That is our dream.

Best regards,

Louie

Ciaò a tutti
the family from my mother's part is coming from Novate Mezzola, I'm italian, the surname of my mother is MONTINI. In this village there're two big families which were MONTINI and NONINI :
I've cousins who call NONINI, because those two families were mixed together during the centuries.
The other village is calling Campo Mezzola more little, those are taking the name Mezzola from the lake. They've the same quantity of people and most part of them are working at Sondrio or in Switzerland.
If you there you'll easily find news from the church and you ask to Don Giacomo who is the priest from the village.
Best regards
Salai
P.S.: i'll send you soon some pictures
