Puzzling names

Post by SimoneTessitore »

Let's see if you guys can figure this one out. My grandfather (according to his request for SS#) was Ralph Tessitore born 4/21/1896 in Caiazzo. His father was Girolamo Tessitore, mother Domenica Cimaglio.

I found a ship manifest, The Cretic, Arrived in New York 9/17/1911 with three names listed together that fit with my family but I'm not sure how.

#9 is Orcangelo Cimaglio, (ggrandmother's last name), age 28, going to his mother Rosa Perone in Connecticut.

#10 Antonio Tessitore, (grandfather Ralphs last name) age 15 5/12 which puts his birthday at April 1896 (same as Ralph), going to his father Domenico in West Virginia.

#11 Guiseppe Mantone, age 27, wife Domenica (same as ggrandmother's first name), going to be with brother Guiseppe (that doesn't even make sense)

So all of the pieces of these three travelers seem to fit with my grandfather, but I can't figure out the relationships.

Are Antonio and Ralph the same person? Twins? They are all from Caiazzo. Is this a big coincidence or can you guys see a link I'm missing?

Thank you,
Simone

For starters, I think we need to link the manifest that you are referring to so everyone can view it..

First Name: Orcangelo
Last Name: Cimaglio
Ethnicity: Italy, South
Last Place of Residence: Caiazzo, Caserta, Italy
Date of Arrival: Sep 17, 1911
Age at Arrival: 28y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Cretic
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0009

Page 1 Manifest

Page 2

Non Immigrant which means he's been there before. Page 2 confirms this ..he was there from 1902 to 1911 in Waterbury. Mother is Rose Perone still living in Italy and is going to Waterbury Connecticut to see his brother in law Salvatore B???? (can't make out the last name). Address in Connecticut is 125 Novelle St.

Let me review the rest of the manifest...

Can you send me a scanned copy or do you just have the internet version from the Ellis Island website? I find a printout from the actually tapes more revealing.

thanks

This would be the info on Arcangelo (manifest is mis spelled)

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Arcangelo Cimaglio
Name: Arcangelo Cimaglio
City: Waterbury
County: New Haven
State: Connecticut
Birth Date: 4 Jan 1883
Race: White
Roll: 1561929

WW1 Draft Cards

Wife's name is Isabella, and they live at 119 Scovill...
No census records available under this spelling so the name has either changed or been mis spelled. Will look for that later. Now for the others..

My grandfather, Ralph Tessitore, registered for WWII on 4/26/1942 in East Haven, Connecticut. It lists my grandmother, his wife, Mrs. Philomine Tessitore, as his contact person. And we know his DOB is 4/27/1896.

So Antonio Tessitore, born in 4/8/1896, just two weeks before Ralph, and from the same town of Caiazzo. Cousins maybe?

Hi Simone,

The first thing I wanted to see was Raffaelo's manifests... and came across these 2 records. Thought I would post them both as this might help with your puzzle....

As transcribed....

Tessicoro,Paffade Caiazso, Italy 1912 16 1896
Tessetoro,Raffaele Caiazzo, Italy 1913 21 1892

We have Ralph born in 1896 leaves father Gerolamo in Caiazzo, and would be joining his Uncle Nicola Cimmaglia. (guessing that it could be mother Domenica's brother...)

First Name: Paffade ( Raffaele born 1896 + - ) (possibly yours...)
Last Name: Tessicoro
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Caiazso, Italy
Date of Arrival: Dec 03, 1912
Age at Arrival: 16y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Cincinnati
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0020

Raffaelo's manifest - page 1

Page 2 manifest
-----------------------------------------

Then we have another Raffaello who leaves father Stefano in Caiazzo, who would be joining brother Giovanni in Schenectady.

First Name: Raffaele (born 1892+ - )
Last Name: Tessetoro
Ethnicity: Italy
Last Place of Residence: Caiazzo, Italy
Date of Arrival: Sep 02, 1913
Age at Arrival: 21y Gender: M Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Ancona
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0011

Raffaelo born 1892 manifest page 1

Page 2
--------------------------------

Antonio Tessitore's father is Domenico
Raffaelo's (1896) Tessitore's father is Gerolamo
Raffaelo's (1892) Tessitore's father is Stefano

My opinion... Stefano and Gerolamo are brothers...

A manifest exists of a Stefano and Gerolamo travelling together.. though the relationship of these 2 is not indicated ....

Nice find Speranza. When I went to bed last night I knew I probably would have missed the obvious (looking for Ralph's manifest) but was hoping you would look for it.

Simone, what other information do you already have then? Originally you only gave a year of birth which was vague. What is your Ralph's parents names? The more info you give us that you already have the easier for us to look for the proper records instead of guessing or duplicating info. And what about the other records? Is Arcangelo related to you?

Guess this could be another cousin then..and the Ralph in the 1930 Census.

Have you a Census record for your Ralph?

First off thank you guys so much for your hard work. At least it seems hard to a newbie like me. I tried all day and didn't come up with what you did.

Nuccia: These are my previous 2 posts shown above:

1) My grandfather (according to his request for SS#) was Ralph Tessitore born 4/27/1896 in Caiazzo. His father was Girolamo Tessitore, mother Domenica Cimaglio

2) My grandfather, Ralph Tessitore, registered for WWII on 4/26/1942, at the age of 45, in East Haven, Connecticut. It lists my grandmother, his wife, Mrs. Philomine Tessitore, as his contact person. And we know his DOB is 4/27/1896.

Unfortunately that, and his death record, are all I have that is certain. No census, no manifest. Nothing.

Speranza: Would it be normal for two brothers (Girolamo and Stefano) to both name their sons Raffaele? Would that mean that their father was probably named Raffaele?

Speranza, can you tell me where you found the manifest showing Girolamo and Stefano traveling together? Thanks.
