Casaretti from Chiavari area

What microfilm? Where do I check that out? I think Casaretti is too small to have microfilm or even records. I viewed an arial photo/map and it seems little more than a cross roads with a few houses but it is so close to Chiavari I have to be interested.

By the way, I bought an antique candy tin from the Rochester Candy Works which is a company the Casaretti's started in Rochester at the turn of the century.

Here is the official website for the comune of Chiavari. You can request birth, marriage, & death acts from them. Requests should be in Italian. It also has other information that may help with your trip.

Will do. It is important that I get some sort of a toe hold in Chiavari before I go there to research next year. By the way, I tried copy/paste of that email and it bounced because there were spaces around the "@". No big deal but could throw off someone.

i'm Laura and I live in Liguria....
I think that it is strongly probably that the surname of yours ancestors was CASARETTO successively modified in USA in Casaretti...
There are Casaretto in Liguria but no Casaretti....

Hi. I have found a few Casaretti's near to Chiavari in Ligure (I can not remember the towns they lived in). The is also that hamlet "Casaretti" that is just east of Chiavari.
Thanks for your help. Do you know the best way to contact the church parish and do you know if they will share records?

The hamlet of Casaretti is in the comune of Ne. Ne is in the Val Graveglia, just east and a little bit south of Chiavari. Because your ancestors were born in 1852, you'll have to find their parish to get birth records. Civil records in that area start in 1866. Some parishes in the area are very responsive, others just the opposite. It just depends on the priest and how many he manages (one I met has 12 -- all in the mountains east of Chiavari).

I haven't had a chance to do a white-pages search for the surname Casaretti/o, but surnames do tend to cluster and remain in the same place for many generations. That might help direct your search.

Glad to hear you're planning a trip! It's a beautiful area which I've visited many times. My ancestors were from Val Fontanabuona (east and a little north of Chiavari) and I make Chiavari my base when I'm there. I've accumulated a list of restaurants etc which I'd be happy to send!

Just reread your original post. Start with their marriage. Since it was in 1869, there will be a civil record. And that will give their birthplaces along with parents' names. It is most likely in the comune of the bride, but there's a good chance they were both from the same comune.

The reason for the spaces is so that no spam can get through....many of our posters write their emails like this to to avoid auto spam...
