I have been trying to research using the internet and have found that a lot of so called free searches end up at ancestry.com.
I also have noticed that they are displaying details from my family tree where I did not upload it to them!
Has anyone else noticed how ancestry.com seems to pop up everywhere with so called free search engines ?
ancestry.com
Re: ancestry.com
If I'm not mistaken, ancestry is the "mother" site so to speak of many of the genealogy sites so once you enter the info on one site, ancestry picks it up...I believe its My Family.Com..
It has happened to me as well but I do know you can make your tree private if you like..
Hope someone can confirm this or share their experiences.

Re: ancestry.com
Nuccia & itye,
Yes, Nuccia is right! Ancestry dominates all genealogy sites. There are quite a few that loop their way back to Ancestry.
For making your tree private, there is a way like Nuccia said. I cannot recall how to do it at the moment. But if you read thru Ancestry site, it does mention it somewhere. Key word "somewhere". I choose not to put in information to start with. Especially on living members of family.
Word of caution, on Genealogy.com you can start your own tree. I do not under any circumstances start any trees on any sites. You can get a free beginner tree maker - I believe the LDS site has a pretty good one.
I know somewhere in this vast info on this site, we had previous discussions on who uses what family tree maker. Check thru some older posts and you will be sure to find it.
These days you cannot be too careful with information.
Hope this helps!

Re: ancestry.com
I do know for sure once you submit a tree to Rootsweb, or even the message board..........Ancestry picks it up.
Someone posted a tree with members of my family in it......it has so many mistakes as to be laughable.....if it weren't my family splashed across the pages!!!!
There are a number of very good research sites available, and I have seen on some where there are seperate search boxes, but you have to watch carefully.
