Information on New York City Garones

Post by jpgarone »

My great grandfather was Nicola Garone born 1912 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Pasquale and Anna Garone. I'm having a very difficult time finding information on this side of my family as there was a rift between the Garones and my grandmother's family after he died. I don't even know where they come from in Italy or what my great grandmother's maiden name was. I've found them in a couple of census records but I have little more information. Any tips?

Hello,
there is this Pasquale Garone living on 1897, at age of 16, from the port of Naples, going to New York

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 1500195024&

What is written on the census records? If there is written the age and maybe he was naturalized by that time, you can make a request to have his Declaration of Intention, Petition and Naturalization record.
There you may find the right date and place of birth.
I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

Thank you for the confirmation of records found.
Before researching Italian records, obtain all US records first.
This will help you to confirm the maiden name and the town of origin.

Here is a site you may find useful, numerous references to the surname of Garone. Also gives information on obtaining documentation.

I found this interesting:

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5840/garonewr1.jpg

New York Petitions for Naturalization

Name: Pasquale Garone
Naturalization Date: 20 Jun 1896
Former Nationality: King of Italy
Arrival Port: NY NY
Arrival Date: 22 Feb 1881
Title and Location of Court: County Court, Kings County, NY
Volume: 271
Page No.: 186
Record Number: 589

Occupation is consistent with the three census found, birthdate would be about 1862........but could be coincedental.

This is very very helpful. The dates seem to match with the range that I have from looking at the census info. The ages are consistent with my census data.

Anna's maiden name I have found variously as "Sasso," or "Iasso" so "Lasso" can be a result of sloppy handwriting.

That town looks to me like Buonale. Anyone ever hear of a town called Buonale? Unless I am reading it wrong. I hardly know any Italian but I can't imagine anything but a "B" coming before "uon."

Just a guess based on the passengers above Pasquale and Anina listing last residence as San Gregorio Magno in Salerno.
Possibly Buonabitacolo.

The ten most common surnames in Buonabitacolo.

Have you looked into ordering records from New York?
This website has some terrific databases and
forms/how-to's for ordering records.
I've done it by mail and on-line. It has taken
between 3-4 weeks to get copies
(when I found the record I needed in their database)
