is there a 'search' feature here

Post by KennyD »

Hello all.. I just joined thinking there might be some links to relevant search engines somewhere on this site? Are there any? How does one go about researching genealogy through ItalianGenealogy.com?

Thank you.

Hi, thanks for replying.
I'm simply trying to look into my Italian heritage but have somewhat limited information to start with.. basically a few names and locations.

Hi Kenny!
Why not put up as much info as you have and we'll see
what we can do.
At the very least we should be able to suggest some
specific search sites tailored to your information.
As wldspirit suggested we just need a little more info.

You will not find Italian records on line, they are few and far between.
Italian records are researched thru microfilm and by writing to the town of origin.
If you would like help in discovering more info, provide as much as you know about the ancestors in question.....and we would be happy to help out.
If you prefer to do the research yourself, then tell us exactly what you are looking for....town of origin? ship manifest? where to write for records?
census? Birth, marriage and death??

Hey Kenny,

The two ladies who posted before me are really great help, they only really need a few names and they can usually work wonders! As for records from Italy, you might try an LDS center, they have many towns records on micro-film. Trust vj and wldsprit they will help as best they can.

Thanks everyone. So... you are saying that I should post what I know about thus far (such as names, locations, etc) here on this chat thread and you and others will help?

You've got it. Post what you know and what you're looking for and we'll see what we can find (ship manifests, census records, etc.) and/or suggest where you might find Italian records. Great group of people here who have a love and knowledge of genealogy, and are willing to help in whatever way they can.

Many of us have access to paid databases which we use to gather records that are not available online elsewhere.......once we find one record, it leads to others....before you know it, you have a complete family picture.
If you are interested in going farther back, researching Italian records,
then you must confirm the town of origin thru records. All Italian records are kept at the commune level......but some have been microfilmed by the Lds. Wonderful resource if available!!!

Even if you just need us to get you started to enable you to research on your own, we're here to help!! You just tell us what you want and how much help to give.........

I was wondering the same thing! If there was a "search" option so I can enter a surname to see if anyone else has psoted about it.

Go to "community forums", at the top of the screen you will see a search button, click on this and the search query will appear.
