D'Angelo from Cesacastina.

Post by TheresaM »

My grandfather, Carmine D'Angelo, was born in Cesacastina in 1890. (His parents Emidio D'Angelo and Sabata Toppi). My grandmother, Italia Chiantelli(??), I believe was born in Naples but not sure; don't know her parents names - her mother died in childbirth, and I believe her father may have emigrated to the US as well. My grandparents were married with at least one child (a boy) when my grandfather emigrated to New York, approximately 1912. My grandmother followed later; don't know when. My grandfather had a home in Italy when he left; he wasn't sure he would stay in the US. From what I understand, his sister moved into his house. I think one of my grandmother's sisters may have married a Schiavi, and also emigrated.

I can't find either of my grandparents on the Ellis Island ship registry, and don't where to write in Cesacastina to see if there is a marriage certificate, birth certificate for my uncle, etc. Any suggestions as to where to start?
Thanks for any help.

P.S. I've found my mom and her family on the NY state census for Niagara Falls; that was neat but nothing there I didn't know or that could help, other than that the second oldest may have been born in Italy as well. (I know the oldest boy died when he was still very young so he isn't on the census). I also have my grandfather's social security application.

Thanks again.

Wow - can't believe all the information, so quickly!!! The 1920 census is the right family. The oldest boy wouldn't have been alive at that point. (My mom wasn't born yet; the census that I have must be from 1930. Four more children followed - Santina, Louis, Mary and Emidio). The draft registration card wouldn't fit - they lived on 17th Street. Also, my grandfather was born in March and I don't know if he had a middle name. The ship information seems like it's right for my grandmother though I never heard that she left and came back - I'll go to the site and look at it. (What does non-immigrant alien mean?) Their first child was definitely a boy unless she was now traveling with another relative. And, maybe when they said she was from Naples, they just meant she left from Naples(?). Thank you so much.

Teramo Province showing both Cortino and Crognaleto. Left of center on the map. Crognaleto is about 5 km southwest of Cortino.

Possible 1907 Manifest for Carminantonio D'Angelo

Line 10, age 17
Destination Niagara Falls to join ?
Last residence Casa....?
Place of birth Casa.....?

Note passenger on line 9 is from Cortino and passenger on line 11 is from
Teramo.
If both manifests are for the same person, we have a discrepancy with town of birth. Name Carminantonio gives more credence to previously post WWI Draft card.

Biff,
You're right, there is an earlier manifest.
Appears the one in 1913 has Carmine in US
previously?

edit:
Name of town:

how abt Cesacastina (looks like Casa Gastina on 1907 manifest)

The commune of Crognaleto, situated in a high
position at the foot of the Gran Sasso, comprises many
small centres, such as Tottea, Piano Roseto,
Cesacastina, Piano Vomano, Nerito, Frattoli,
San Giorgio

No, please, please keep looking!! Brought a tear to my eye - I never thought I'd get so much information so quickly! Sabata is certainly Elisabetta but the draft registration throws me off. I thought he was born in March, and the birthplace doesn't match, but I'll ask my mom about his birthday. (I know she doesn't know (or remember) where he was born. All they ever said was a small town outside of Rome. With the exception of two, all aunts, uncles and mom are still living - most don't know much about the immigration history, but my mom knew her cousins, etc. I'll be pulling info from her tonight!).

I know you have all the right families - my mom told me years ago that the courts made her mom change her name from Italia to Ethel (they told her something to the effect that no one can use the name of a country for a first name). She never used it that I knew of.

I've got so many leads now, thank you very much. (Are there phone books or the like available on line for foreign countries; when my grandfather died, he left a letter, unmailed, to his sister. My mom doesn't know where it is but I know he had family still there). Again, I can't thank you enough.
