Sabino Petruzzi in Newark?
Re: Sabino Petruzzi in Newark?
Damn! On Sabino's marriage license, Mary's mother is given as Carmenia Robertilo. But in my mother's photo album, Mary's mother is given as Carmella Sorde. I'll query this tomorrow.
Re: Sabino Petruzzi in Newark?
Mom says Sabino's sister was named Rose Saldutti. My aunt says she was named Mary. Salvatore Petruzzi's draft card says he was employed by P. Saldutti's Sons. He lived on Downing St. and was employed on Jackson St.
My mother's birth certificate spells her name Maria Carmine Petruzzi. Father was Sabino Petruzzi and mother was Maria Tussello. The address in 1927 was 176 8th Ave.
Her baptismal certificate spells her name Maria Carmela Petruzzi, her father Sabino Petruzzi, and her mother Maria Torsiella.
My mother said that her grandmother's maiden name was Carmella Robertilo, not Carmenia. She says southern Italians have a habit of swallowing syllables and thus the odd spellings.
Now there are so many spellings that I'm overwhelmed with hits. Valerie, is there a way to sort the wheat from the chaff?

John,
You bet!
Sounds like you've become the family historian.
Take a few minutes to regroup...
You originally wanted to find out if your mother's
father had been naturalized?
That question still isn't answered.
We have a lot of information, but we don't quite
know where everything fits.
You're talking things over with your family -
that's terrific!
If you want to get organized (don't lose your notes!):
The LDS Family History Library is a great resource.
They have forms and a free genealogy computer program
to help you get your ducks lined up.

We'll keep looking and try to sort this out!

Re: Sabino Petruzzi in Newark?
Hi John, I got an e-mail from the site telling me that you had replied to my original topic before starting this one. I have a lot of information on Petruzzis in Newark. Now the upside is that I know they are originally from Gesualdo. The downside is that I don't have anyone similar to your name in my tree. That's not to say that there's no relation; I doubt the odds of two Petruzzis from the same small town in southern Italy not being related to each other are very high. I e-mailed my cousin Nicky, who just went to Italy this past summer, to see what he came up with. Once I hear back from him, I'll see what I can do. I'm quite excited that this site may help both of us find relatives we never knew we had!

Re: Sabino Petruzzi in Newark?
Hi Anthony. It sounds like Gesualdo is the place to look. I've entered all the information into an Excel spreadsheet. Should I email it to you? You can look it over and see if there's anything you can use, and if you find a connection, please let me know.
Valerie, I really appreciate all the help. I'm going to set this aside for now and look for a birth certificate from Gesualdo.
Appreciatively,
John

Glad your notes are organized.
Your spreadsheet sounds excellent

Re: Sabino Petruzzi in Newark?
Success -- the first step!
My sister just emailed me a birth certificate -- Sabino Petruzzo, son of Andrea Petruzzo and Filomena Verdi, born in Gesualdo 13 March 1880. So he's older than we expected but it's got to be him -- what are the odds that the parents names would match like that?
And on to the next step, a search for a certificate of naturalization, which we hopefully will not find.
Ciao,
John

Re: Sabino Petruzzi in Newark?
Is it possible to find a ship's manifest by date of arrival?
I have a petition for naturalization (under age) for Sabino Petruzzi, which gives his arrival as 24 Dec 1893 at the port of New York, and his age as 21 in Oct 1904 -- making him 9 years old when he arrived.
I'd like to cross check this agains the Ellis Island records, but none of the Petruzzis or Petruzzos arrived on Dec 24th, 1893. Still, I'd like to check the manifests to see if there were any 9 year old boys arriving from Italy around that date. However, ellisisland.com doesn't allow me to search for ships by arrival date.
Is there another source for ship's manifests?
Thanks,
John
