Cimato
Hi Everyone,
I might have to get my great grandmother's birth certificate.
The problem is that I don't know exactly where she's from!
I know I know... what we do know is that she was from
Calabria, we just don't know exactly where in Calabria.
Her name is Antoinette Cimato and was born 5 April 1899,
She came to America with her parents (her father's name
was Domenico Cimato) and her brother Santo in
either 1901 or 1906 (on my great grandfather's [her husband]
naturalization paper it says she entered the US on 1 July 1906
and got naturalized on 7 Aug. 1901... dates must be mixed up?).
On my great grandfather's Naturalization paper it only says she
was born in Calabria, Italy. It doesn't list the town.
There's no one around who would know her exact town, and her
grandchildren only know that she came from Calabria.
Is there a way that we can find out so I can get her birth certificate?
Has anyone delt with anything like this before?
JOHN

Re: Cimato
Could this be her?
Antonia Cimato
Estimated birth year: abt 1899
Age: 7
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Ship Name: Italia
Search Ship Database: View the Italia in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Line: 28
Microfilm Serial: T715
Microfilm Roll: T715_734
Page Number: 38
arrival June 29, 1906
It looks like it says Gallica as the town of origin.

Re: Cimato
One more thing, this girl was held for a day at Ellis Island as a likely public charge and then was admitted to the country on June 30 (pretty close to July 1), so this may be her.

Re: Cimato
Hey Poipuo,
thanks for the response.
Well, it looks good, and June 29th is close to the 30th.
does it say if she came with anyone? and what would a
"public charge" be?
Also, on her S.S. card it says her name as
Antoinette F. Aiello [her maiden surname was Cimato]
Is it possible she changed her first name from Antonia
to Antoinette? I know Antoinetta exists as a italian name,
but does Antoinette?
Would she have had to legally change her first name?
That looks like a good match though.
Where does it say Gallica?
thanks!

Re: Cimato
That just goes to show you the Steve Morse Ellis Island index is flawed. Antonia is not listed there, yet in Ancestry you get the manifest listed above. Good work Poipuo, the fact that this Antonia you found is the daughter of a Domenico cements your findings.
Antonia was often Anglicized to Antonette or Antoinette.
Here is the image Poipuo found for you, line 28.

Re: Cimato
Thanks for posting the link, James. John: all my grandparents and their siblings Americanized their names. Michele to Michael, for example. The American name is on all of their American documents, except for their naturalization papers.
A likely public charge, or LPC, was someone that immigration felt could become a burden on society to support. Usually it was women or children travelling without a man (i.e. the man would support them in the new world). A branch of my family arrived without a man and were labeled as such and detained on Ellis Island. If you do a search on this board for "Board of Special Inquiry," you will find a thread of mine with some good links from the folks on this board about being labelled an LPC.

Re: Cimato
i'm almost positive that this is her.
it makes sense... the father is Domenico... and the final destination is brooklyn. it makes perfect sense.
and Gallico is in Calabria, near the water, and my cousin remembers
her talking about being near the water.
she also had a brother named Filippo Cimato, anything on him?
this is exciting!
thanks so much guys!

Re: Cimato
Here is a Filippo Cimato born about 1898 with his mother? Santa Caracciolo, sister of Giuseppe arriving 1902, both from Gallico.

looks good!
I believe Filippo and Antoinette's mother was named either Santina or Santa... and Filippo was older than Antoinette. and it seems they all came from from gallico.

Re: Cimato
also, on Santa Filippo Cimato's manifest, it says something, near the
guiseppe thing, that someone had a passport. did they have one, or did guiseppe have one? also, under their race, is says "Dit. Disch On Pier".
what does that mean?

Re: Cimato
John.
That's Cit indicating they were US citizens and discharged at the pier. I believe the other information might be the passport number and the date of issue.

Hey guys
I cannot express how thankful i am of your help.
It seems like this is definately them!
it all fits in perfectly and makes sense.
Now, is there a way we can find information on my great grandmother's
father, Domenico Cimato ?
any ship manifests or any information on him?

Re: Cimato
Hey Jimmy,
thanks so much! i guess with this manifest
he left brooklyn and went back to italy again
for something, and then came back in.
i wonder if we can find his original entry manifest.
