Looking for ancestors of Michelangelo Logoteta (b.1885) and Maria Vincenza Sofia (b.1889). They came to USA in 1909 and 1910 respectively. Maria's mother, Teresa Bruno a widow at the time, came with her. Thank you.

In Italy all rfecords are in the town of origin. If you don't know the town then go to www.ellisisland.org and look up their arrival for the town olf orign. In the meantime if you do know rthe town of origin then go to www.paginebianche.it and insert the surname you are interested in the first line and the town of origin in the third line and click CERCA for any listing of persons with that surname in that town. This will give you a listing by name,address and telephone number if any reside rthere. Peter

I looked at the passenger manifest for Michelangelo. His birthplace is hard to read, but I believe it is Condofuri, a town in the province of Reggio Calabria. His last residence looks like Aieta, and the manifest states that his wife, Vincenza, was left behind in Aieta.

Additionally, "admitted" is stamped next to Michelangelo's name on the manifest, which means he was detained at Ellis Island for a time before being admitted to the U.S. If you page to the end of the manifest, you should find a list of detainees. There you will find the reason for and the length of his detention.

According to the manifest for Vincenza and Teresa, they were born in Aieta. (By the way, Vincenza and Teresa both have "admitted" stamped next to their names.) Aieta, in Cosenza province, is 200 miles from Condofuri. Vital records for Aieta for the period 1809-1910 are available on microfilm through Family History Centers. You should find Vincenza's birth and marriage records on the microfilm, as well as records for her ancestors. Records for Condofuri are available for the same period, so you will be able to find the record for Michelangelo and his family.

The old Italian records can be hard to decipher. I highly recommend you check your local library for a copy of "Discovering Your Italian Ancestors" by Lynn Nelson. This book was specifically written to assist researchers using the FHC microfilms.
