Alternate spelling on Ellis Island site...

Post by Gram »

I have had the good fortune to find Franceso Lonetto's first entry into the US. I found his entry in 1910, on the Ellis Island site, but knew there had been a previous entry in 1903. I had sent three requests to NARA for different ports of entry and had found nothing. Recently I went back to Ellis Island site and patiently went through many alternate spellings. Suddenly, it was there, Francesco Lonetta, from Mesoraca, arrived Jan 28, 1903.
Peter, I know you have said names were not changed and were copied from departure documents but in this case, and maybe for others, a simple mistake in handwriting, one letter, made all the difference.
So, keep trying every method you can until you are successful!
If anyone has time to look, I have one question about this entry for Francesco Lonetta, Column 06, Occupation. I can't understand what is written. It is the same entry for many other passengers.

Hi,
I believe the occupation reads: Carry Man.

There is always the exception and this is an exception provided his surname was Loretta and not Lonetta. Peter

Thanks for your help...I also, thought the last part was Man. Would Carry Man be an actual occupation? Any help appreciated.

Peter...His surname is positively Lonetto, not Lonetta. In 1903. the mistake was in the recording of the last letter of his surname. When he came in 1910, the name was correct.
