Need Help with Picasa

Post by Emmy »

When I download photographs onto my picture folder they automatically get transferred to Picasa. That was great because then I could darken/lighten them etc. Although all of the photographs have been transferred not all show up on the monitor. I checked the folder and they were lisited as being transferred. I then tried to import the ones that didnt show up. What came up on this screen was a small image of the photograph that wont come up on the monitor with a red circle with a red cross in the middle of it. Tried the HELP menu but nothing there to say what this means.
Any ideas ?

Here are 2 sections from the help Emmy. Hope it helps.

Why can't I import in Picasa?
In some instances, problems will arise with Picasa, Windows, or your digital camera software that prevents importing. This is most common with Windows 98, ME, and 2000. XP has built in software for communicating with devices like digital cameras and will commonly be able to import from them without the necessity of installing the camera software.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

- Try plugging the camera's USB cable into a different USB port, preferably one that is built directly into the computer (not in a hub, printer, etc.).

- If possible, try inserting a different media card (that has photos on it) into your camera to see if you can successfully import from it. If you can, the other card may be corrupted.

If just the one card is bad, you will need to reformat that card. First, if possible, import your files off of the card using Windows or the manufacturer's software. Reformat the card using your camera's option interface. Once it is reformatted, the card should function normally again.

- If you are using Windows XP, try uninstalling the software that came with your camera. Again, Windows XP will commonly detect your camera on its own, so the manufacturer's software may actually be getting in the way.

- If you are using Windows 98, ME, or 2000, the manufacturer's software, at least the camera USB drivers, MUST be installed.

- Visit the camera manufacturer's web site to see if they offer updated drivers for your camera model. If available, please download and install the updates. If they are not available, reinstall your existing drivers. Many times, driver reinstallation alone will fix the problem.

- Some cameras, particularly Kodak, have made the import process proprietary to their software. In some cases, it will not be possible to import photos directly from your camera to Picasa. In these situations, you can use the manufacturer's software to import the photos to your hard drive, and as long as the Picasa folder manager is set to "Scan Always" on the import locations, the photos will still appear automatically in Picasa.

I can't find some of my photos in Picasa!

If you're having a problem getting pictures or folder to show up in Picasa, please check the following:

- Small pictures? Picasa filters out photos smaller than 250x250. Check "small pictures" under the "View" menu to include them in your Picasa library.

- File type checked? Go to "Tools"> "Options"> "File Types" and verify support for all the formats you want is on. GIF and PNG are off by default, and MOV will be disabled if Quicktime is not installed on your system.

- Folder watched? Check the Picasa Folder Manager, under the "Tools" menu. An eye next to your folder means Picasa is watching it for changes. If you see a red X, or a green checkmark, check the "Scan Always" box to watch the folder.

- Hidden files or folders? Picasa will not show any files or folders that have been marked hidden in Windows. You can tell if something is hidden by opening up My Computer, and navigating to the location. Right-click and choose "Properties" to check the attributes: "Hidden" must be unchecked in order for Picasa to see the files. Tip: If your filenames look ghosted-out in Windows Explorer, that means they're hidden.

- Disconnected network drive? If you store your pictures on a network, please check that you aren't losing the connection to it.

- Other Collections? Not everything will be automatically placed in your Folders Collection. Folders with items that are not digital photos could be down in the Other Stuff Collection- "My Videos" can sometimes be found here. Don't forget that Hello downloads go into your "From Hello Collection," and exports end up in "Exported Pictures."

- Filtered folder name? Picasa doesn't scan certain folders, these include: "C:\Windows", "C:\Program Files", and any folder named "Originals".

- Damaged or corrupted files? Sometimes files become damaged or corrupted- this is another reason it's important to always make backups! If Picasa encounters a damaged file, it may cause an error message to pop up, and Picasa will not include that file in its library.

- Unsupported file format? We can index many photos, but not everything! Our Help Center has a list of supported file types:

Many Thanks Elizabeth
The photgraphs that are not coming up in Picasa are ones that a friend sent me by google(email) I get other photographs sent through email (not google) and they transfer fine, and all my own 'photos from my digital works too. Just so annoying. I have already been into the 'folder watched' section that's where the red cross came up. I've also been to the 'hidden folder' section too.
Since I'm an EXPERT at deleting things I shouldnt I guess I'll just have to wait until I get my computer 'expert' to have a look for me.

Many thanks for answering my post Elizabeth it is very much appreciated
