Finding out about Brusatto

Post by Brusatto »

We know nothing about my father Joseph's ancestors as he was adopted from a foundling home in Sorbo San Basile, Catanzaro Province, Calabria, soon after his birth 7-9-1896 by a family named Cielo (Chali in the U.S.). Years later an aunt told him his name was Brusatto. This is a unique spelling of the name and we have found only two others, one in Belgium and one in France with the same spelling (which may be wrong). Since I speak only English, I need advice on contacting them.
Joseph (Chali) Brusatto 7-9-1896, came to the U.S. in about 1903 to New York and his family settled in Denver. He died in 1956. I have been unable to locate any reference to his arrival in this country.
His family would appreciate any advice available about finding out something about his ancestors although we have been searching a lifetime without. results. Thank you!

Hello,
I have some questions and advices for you:
Did you check his real birth record?
Is he listed as Giuseppe Cielo or Giuseppe Brusatto?
Was he born on July 9th or September 7th?
I suggest you to check the real birth record and also I suggest you to contact Archvio di Stato di Catanzaro that should keep the records of entries of the foundling home located in the village of Sorbo San Basile.
You can extract a copy of his real birth record renting this Sorbo San Basile civil record microfilm to FHL (mormon church)

Nati 1868-1910 -- Pubblicazioni 1866-1910 -- Matrimoni 1867-1910 -- Morti 1866-1888 FHL INTL Film #1848778 Items 3 - 6

or you can write to Sorbo San Basile Civil record office

Comune
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Piazza Margherita
CAP 88050
Sorbo San Basile (CZ)
Italy

I hope it helps
bye Riccardo

Luigi aged 48 and Domencio aged 18 BRUSATTO both arrived March 3, 1890 destined to the same place (Castle Garden furnsihes 4 digit numbers as source of destination..Anybody??). The ellisisland.org website also shows Sebastiano Brussato, age 20, single arriving NYC 9/23/1912 as a returning resident to NYC.

The only other strong possiblity is that entry could very well have been made thru another Port (Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and so on down to New orleans). remore possiblity is transborder crossing from canada to USA which can be checked out by filing NATF form 84 for all canadian crossings.

Please keep us posted. =Peter=

Peter, I couldn't find an answer to your excellent question.
I sent a note to Dr Steve Morse.
I'll post his response as soon as he replies.

Response from Dr Steve Morse :D
Dr Steve Morse, author of One-Step Pages

Valarie,

Others have asked that question as well and I have not been able to obtain a
list of all these codes.
What I have been told (by others) are the following codes:

7328: USA
2880: Canada
3455: Bermuda
7778: New York

If you ever discover the full list, please let me know.

-- Steve Morse

orig note:
Dr Morse, I'm another of your long time admirers!
Question for you when you have time...
On the Castle Garden search site, what is the
meaning of the 'destination' number on the
passenger results page, ie 7788
Thank you!
