Montagna/Montana surname

Post by mmontana »

All,

I'm looking for any information on the italian surname Montagna/Montana. I am in St. Louis, Missouri and can only seem to trace relatives back to my great grandfather, John Montana. Everything seems to get lost after that.

I know John was married to Maria Zulpo and had three children before he died in 1939. I know Maria Zulpo came to America through the Sunnyside, Arkansas/Rosati, Missouri farming communities. I also have a connection to the Pesselato surname in these same farming communities but I cannot seem to trace the Montana name back past the early 1900's.

Please let me know any and all information you may need from me to help you out. I appreciate any help and/or directions you can give me.

Thanks,
Matt Montana

I cannot seem to trace the Montana name back past the early 1900's.

If these US records belong to your Giovanni Montagna

You can order and view your family’s vital records
from Italy thru your local Family History Center (LDS):

Titles: Registri dello stato civile, 1806-1899 Brogliano (Vicenza).

A couple more clues on two possibly related manifests

?? Brother Virgilio Montagna 22
1909 manifest
page 2
In US before in Michigan
Mother in Brogliano: ?? Sambugaro
Joining brother Bartolo in IL
edit to correct mother's maiden name per Biff's suggestion
---

?? Brother Luigi Montagna 26
1913 manifest
page 2
Father in Brogliano Angelo
Joining uncle Martino Cailotto in Staunton
---

No doubt there are quite a few more family manifests
& census records
note: Montagna is often mis-spelled as Montaguo,
you may want to try partial name searches

Nice work, Valarie!

I believe the maiden name on Virgilio's manifest is Sambugaro.

Valerie and Biff,

Holy cow you guys are quick! Thanks for the leads, I will chase them down and see how things play out. I did have the 1910 and 1920 census information already but everything else is new.

Genealogy is new to me so I appreciate the resources to look into as well. If I have more questions, can I ask you for more help?

Thanks again, your speed and knowledge is impressive.

It seems : Sambugaro Dani (I don't know Dani as a first name, maybe it could be the short of Daniela?)

Happy New Year to you all!!!!!

My grandmother was Rose Pesselato, also through sunnyvale. Other names in my family's italian heritage include: Zulpo, DiMercurio, Chemello. Do those ring a bell for you?
