Giuseppantonio and Giuseppe Antonio
Thre's many other examples. Is there some general practce about writing names combined or separate? Is making it one a lazt shorthand?

Interesting question Jim - and good topic for anyone searching.
I never gave it a thought to merge Carmen and Antonio when I was searching for my grandfather. Yes - after 3 months searching - I found him as Carminantonio and I almost kicked myself for not thinking of it.

Re: When is it 1 name or 2 names?
This is just a stab in the dark, but is it a linguistic reason? The last vowel in Giuseppe merges with the first vowel in Antonio to become Giuseppantonio? Sort of like how La Italia becomes L'Italia becase the "a" in La merges with the vowel sound of the "I" in Italia???
Re: When is it 1 name or 2 names?
Have seen this everywhere in the records I have reseached. In some birth records, they are Giuseppe Antonio, but later refered to as Giuseppantonio.
The vowel ending to vowel beginning makes sense...but then there is Giovanni Batiste to Giambatiste. Always something gums up the works!

Re: When is it 1 name or 2 names?
Could it have something to do with the Italian naming custom. Many grandsons named after one grandfather leads to lots of comfusion. So perhaps it began as a middle name Nicola Antonio, Nicola Angelo and morphed into Nicolantonio and Nicolangelo to identify the cousins.
I believe the Giovanni Batiste must be dialect because my father and his grandfather were known as Giovanbattista.
