Need help translating Seaman records, please
Need help translating Seaman records, please
Hi
My Grandfather was an Italian seaman and I have luckily came across some records of his from his time at sea and was hoping that someone might be able to translate these pages for me.
There's about 7-8 pages and unfortunately I do not speak or read Italian.
Any help would be fantastic.
Thanks

I think a lot would depend on the quantity of the content of those 7-8 pages that you want translated... You don't explain what they are - a diary, a ships log ???

Re: Need help translating Seaman records, please
It looks similar to a passport. There's not alot of writing on the pages but from what I have managed to translate it states things like his movements at sea, what position/job he was doing at the time. There is some additional information listed on some of the pages but I have no clue what it is in relation to.
I tried translating it myself using some of the sites on the net but some of the info I could not understand. Some of the actual writing is hard to decipher.
I've attached a copy of one of the pages.
Thanks

Re: Need help translating Seaman records, please
Thanks Elba that is very kind of you.
Would you be interested in having a look at the other pages for me?
The main info I want to be able to understand is the position/job he was in throughout his period as a seaman, as well as the translation for the additional information that is included on these documents.
thanks again

I don't know about anyone else, but I find this interesting. I don't know about all eight (esp. as I'm not translating ), but I'd like to see one or two more. See if he moved up from cabin boy, and noted any in-between stops (instead of just departing and arriving in Messina).
Oh, and don't forget the little margin notations for months/days at sea -- 3 months and 5 days for this trip (which should help you confirm departure/arrival dates).

Re: Need help translating Seaman records, please
Why don't you post the others here one or two at a time? I'm sure there are translators here (myself included) that will willingly try to help you. It makes it interesting too for others to follow the story as it evolves.kirsty wrote:Thanks Elba that is very kind of you.
