Sannizzaro/Cardilli need help please

Post by jennci »

I've come across this one issue researching my family tree and would love any help! My great grandfather Pietro Sannizzaro born in (?)1884, I believe born in Pozzallo traveled to US in 1912 from Gudamendi then supposedly his wife, my great grandmother Giuseppina Sannizzaro (DOB 1889) (maiden name also question on spelling "Cardilli") made the trip soon after. I cannot find any record of Giuseppina coming into the US and have been told by some US family that the Sannizzaro name was spelled wrong when they came to the US and that Sannizzaro may be actually "Sannazzaro, Cannizzaro or some other spelling." I am in desperate need on finding the correct spelling on both "Sannizzaro" and "Cardilli" to obtain birth and marriage records. Thank you, Jenn:)

Hi Jenn :D !
Question, on your great grandfather's 1912 manifest,
it states he was born in Guidomandri (Messina). Do you think
that's an error? It will be tough to order his family records
from Italy without the exact town.
Thanks! Valarie

Thanks so much for answering!
When I read that I thought that it says "where his residence was at that time." So when leaving Italy he lived in Gudamendi I thought it to mean.

Somethiing I came across yesterday, (I'll look thru my records) I understood it as his place of birth was Pozzallo.

I'm running to dinner but would really appreciate any help :D

Jenn

Ohhh!!! I see it your right, my bad! Okay so I guess thats where he was born!

If this is Pietro's Draft Registration Card
1918
Giuseppina's maiden name appears to be Cardile?

Wow, your good! I have the first thing (index card) but never found the oath, petition & declaration! My 2nd cousin told me that Giuseppina's last name was Cardilli and he spelt it out for me, then in the ellis island book thing if you look carefully at the spelling of her name it does seem to match up. When she moved here she did go by Josephine, I did find her death info (my G.Father died she got re-married) Do you know of any way to search on-line for Birth certificates and marriage info from Italy? and to search to see what the "real" last name is?

Giuseppa was travelling with her son Giuseppe (5 months old) them both were born and resident of Guidomandri, she was leaving in Italy her father Settimio (or Letterio?) and was joining her husband Sannizzari? Pietro in 138 Merrimac? street, Boston.
On her name there is also a naturalization mark, it seems:
1 - 255976 - Feb 2, 1939
I'm sorry because I can't post larger images, maybe VJ can post them larger?

Hi J !!

I have only been researcing for about a month or so now , but I can tell you I have come across some ridiculous interpitations of my families names , who they were coming to see, their places of origin. Everything !! To say nothing of trying to decode the handwriting.

On what I believe is my grandfathers manifest , there seem to have been 5 other people he was traveling with him to the same destination. All stated they were going to see the same person , however on each one of the lines the persons name is misspelled. There are not two that are the same.

So, keep up the research , faith , and the love of genealogy.

Amazing, the time I have spent researching and there is so much I never found! Thank you SO much! What site do you use for your research? So is it true that the village of birth Gudomandri no longer exists?

Ancestry.com ( free trail for two weeks but you have to enter CC info )

Ellis Island ( this one is free )

There is another I was told about that incorporates all sites on one. It is in my post I will find it for you.
