Where can I see a ship manifest?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Where can I see a ship manifest?

Post by JMFL »

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to see a copy of the ship manifest for my grandfather. Here is the information that I know:

His first name was Giovanni and his last name was Rocchi.
He was on the SS Napoli from Naples to Boston September 2, 1913.
He was born on Feb 16, 1882 and was married to Anna. Anna didn't travel with him as she stayed behind with their two children for another two years. He lived in Ronciglione, (VT), Italy before leaving for the USA.

Anyone have any suggestons on how I can see a copy of the ship manifest?
Thanks,
JM in FL

Ancestry.com has Boston manifests. If you don't have a subscription, I am sure that someone here will be able to help. Anna probably travelled under her maiden name. Do you know it?

Yes, Anna left Italy in late 1916 or possibly early 1917. her name was Anna Pelliccia. She was traveling with her two daughters, Beatrice and Petronilla. I am interested in know who Giovanni may have traveled with and also where he was headed as I'm trying to learn about his side of the family. For Anna, I have a cousing in Conn. who has been in contact with relatives in Italy. They have supplied some info on Anna but no one knows anything about Giovanni. I don't have a subscription to Ancestry. com. Is there any place else where I might fbe able to see a copy of the ship manifest?

Thanks,

Hi Biff,

Thanks for posting the manifest for Anna and two of my aunts. I really appreciate it. It helps give me a base to start expanding my search from.
One of my cousins is jumping for joy over the information. (Her mom was one of the girls who made the trip with Anna).

Thanks so very much,

No Biff, I didn't have a copy of that. I knew the information from somewhere in my search but I never saw a copy of the actual census. Eleanora and Valentine were actually twins. It looks like someone had them both with the same age and then changed Eleanora to be older than Valentine by two years.

Thanks for taking the time to make that available for me. I am very grateful to you, this list, and all those that contribute to it.

Thanks again,

Wow Biff, you are too much! Thank you thank you thank you. I never saw any of this information and that is my grandfather.

Can you possibly find the same info for my paternal grandfather? His name was Domenico Mandica in Italy. (Dominick Mandico some time after my dad was born in the US).

Here is what I know about him:
Born 7/20/1889 in San Lorenzo, Reggio Calabria, Calabria.
Left Italy from port of Palermo and arrived in NY on Sept 3, 1909.
Married Caterina, aka Catherine aka Katherine in Oct. 14, 1915. Had 4 children, Lucy, Anthony, Angelina and my dad, John. Lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey and also in Tottenville Staten Island, NY.

On 1930 census it says my grandfather naturalized in 1905 but since he didn't come to US until 1909 I don't think this is true.

Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks Biff. It looks like both my grandparents were naturalized on the census. I have my grandmother's naturalization certificate though and she didn't naturalize until much later, I think it was around 1944. (I have them in another room). I can't find any papers on my grandfather but I guess he could have naturalized a few years after he arrived here. He didn't speak much english that I recall, he died when I was 4½ years old but I do remember him only speaking in Italian. I'm thinking the info on the census may be inaccurate since it looks like almost everyone on the page was naturalized. (I'm assuming the NA in the column means the person was naturalized).

I'll see what I can do to find out more about him. Thanks so much for the data you have given me. It will help me in my search.

Good night,

JMFL....

You must be Eleanor's daughter or son??

(I just talked to Dad, and he said that Eleanor is in Florida!!)

I think just the two of them are left now...
