It's a real pity, Robin, that you can't understand the "sound" of those italian letters. They have a sentiment, a power, i'll say a "life" tha can't be translated and only a mother-tongue can "capture". They represent the conditions of almost all italian migrants in the earliest '900 and bring in them that world!

But I know (for a fact) that the translators here can do the "miracle".

Luca is right...........he writes with so much love and longing for her that English just doesn't capture it the same way.

Thank you Lucap, Suanj, Elba and Sirena. I honestly cannot adequately express my gratitude. My grandparents didn't teach my father Italian, English was always spoken and he recently told me that he regretted not having learned it. I have a feeling that occured more often than not. It's too bad that I can't hear the letters read in Italian, my ridiculous attempts are laughable.
As I wrote at my site, everything Thomas left behind has become precious to us because he died so young and the memories of a five year old not very clear. You have put a voice to the man who has, in the past, been mostly just a photograph to me. The letters were very sweet, even in English. And I loved that he signed as her husband even though they didn't actually marry until 1923.
