Pietrofitta Search

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Pietrofitta Search

Post by Sampet »

Hello. I am just starting a search for my family with the surname Pietrofitta. It is spelled variously as Pietrafitta, Petrafetta, Pietrafitto. I have a copy of my grandfather's naturalization certificate where his name is spelled Salvatore Pietrofitto and is dated March 31, 1944. His age at that time was 63. I believe his birthdate was Jan 3, 1881. According to the last living relative he was from Barcellona Pozzo Di Gotto Messina, Sicily, Italy.

I have searched with the present spelling with no results. There is a town named Pietrafitta in the Cosenza area of Calabria but this seems to be a dead end.

Unfortunately I believe he immigrated through the Port of Philadelphia and not Ellis Island where the records seem to be more easily available. I understand that he took at least one visit back to Italy probably between 1910 and 1925.

Some time back I was in contact with a Pietrafitta family in Southern New Jersey but we couldn't find any common roots. There are also some Pietrafitta's in the Boston, MA area. Any ideas for a search would be appreciated. I believe he definitely came from the Messina area.

Thanks

Sam (Salvatore) Pietrofitta

Go to www.worldvitalrecords.com and just insert his name andnothing else and you will see that you have the correct spelling and his year of birth. Then go to your nearest Mormonchurch family history library (www.familysearch.or for location) and rent out microfilm of civil records for Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, (ME) Sicilyfor about 5 dolllars and this covers all births, marriages and deaths from 1810 to 1910. =Peter=

Go to the www.worldvitalrecords.com and click below the social security findins where it says "with soundex on the surname" and then click Ellisisland and then locate Salvatore Pietrofitta arriving at NYC on the SS Gallia out of Napoli on April21,1905 at age 24 (making his birth year 1881). He is from Calatabiano (prov. Catania) postale 95011. It is very close. =Peter=
