We cannot find any information about my great grandmother. My great grandfather traveled to the US in 1906 and returned to Italy at least once, maybe twice before his wife and children came here with him. Would his name be the only one listed on the passenger manifest or should everyone's name be listed?

Every manifest I have shows everyone. They seem to have the father's full name then the children below with "son" or "daughter" or just a " listed below the father's name for each child's surname, then the mother's full name. These are all 1900-1913 Ellis Island manifests.

Does the manifest you have only show men over the age of 21? That would be strange.

Your g-grandmother may have traveled under her maiden name.

Just want to notice you that Teresa and her child's last residence in Italy was Bussi (Abruzzi Region, Pescara Province) but their place of birth was Capestrano (same region, L'Aquila province)....

Thank you! We have not been able to find any of that information. And I think that he mixed up the dates on his naturalization papers because the dates I found on ellisisland.org didn't match those. I'm sure if he went back and forth a few times they would all run together..

Now my next challenge is finding informaton about her in Italy- the information we have states her parents were Augustine and Mary but that she was raised in a convent. Felice and Theresa were married in Italy also.

You might be able to go to the comune from which they emigrated and request a Stato Di Famiglia Originario. I have one (an original from the 1906) and it lists everyone in the family, when and where the person was born, and their parents. Then you can go to her comune of birth and request her birth certificate and/or a Stato Di Famiglia Originario for that family.

Was it common for women to travel under their maiden names?

In Italy, women retain their maiden name.
Once in America, they then took our custom of using the
husband's surname.

On a ship manifest, you find the women using their maiden name.

Not sure about other nationalities.....
