Re: Translation Please
The certificate states that Antonina Mini(?) daughter of Giuseppe and Serafina Pace(?) was born in Caccamo on Oct 27 1875.
P.S. Next time post a larger image

Re: Translation Please
It is in fact an 'extract' from the Register of Births. The fact that it is on Carta Bollata (Stamped Paper) means that it is a certified copy and could be used for legal purposes as a birth certificate.

Re: Translation Please
Your translation is far more accurate! As you said, the birth year is 1885...elba wrote:...

I'm not sure about he surnames, the picture is too small
Re: Translation Please
I usually copy and past to Word - then I can enlarge if needed. I 'think' I got the surnames right....liviomoreno wrote:Your translation is far more accurate! As you said, the birth year is 1885...elba wrote:...

Mind you, this system doesn't always work if the writing is blurry to start with!

Re: Translation Please
Nice trick!!!!
Re: Translation Please
Thank you Elba and Liviomoreno for the translation. You have solved another mystery for me. My grandmothers name has been changed several times and I have had problems tracing her. So her real name is Antonina Rini, and her parents are Giuseppe Rini and Faso Serafina Rini.
What does Faso translate to in english?
Thank both of you for helping.

Re: Translation Please
Faso is the maiden surname of Serafina Rini (nèe Faso), Antonina's mother.

Re: Translation Please
In Italy when a woman marries she retains and continues to use her maiden surname. So your grandmother's name is Antonina Faso and she would add, or official documents would add, 'in Rini'.
In a nutshell, in America a married woman would be known as:
Maria Rossi neè Verdi
But, in Italy she would always be known as:
Maria Verdi in Rossi.
This often causes many people new to research to miss finding their ancestors - simply because they disregard them because of the surname. This is most easily done when searching ships manifests when the wife travels alone or with her children... So if Maria Rossi neè Verdi was shown with her children on a ship's manifest she would be shown as Maria Verdi and her children would have their fathers surname shown...
P.S. The first name of your Lena Reina or Rina could be an abbreviation of Angelina - this was often the case and once again causes searches to fail.

Re: Translation Please
Lina is the diminutive for all names terminating in Lina while there is no name for Lena which is not even considered a diminutive in Italyfor any other first names. So whatever informal use of the name Lena albeit spelling it is personal and not listed among first Italian names. =Peter=

http://gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html under nomi Lina............no Lena indicated and this is from Italy!! Any use of name spelled Lena is informal pursuant to Italy website. Italian word dicitonary defines Lena as short for Maddalena. =Peter=
