Well if we're going to be really 'picky' we should also look at the Italian pronunciation surely...

The Italian 'I' is pronounced as an 'EE'
So Angelina = Angeleena

The Italian 'E' is pronounced 'EH'
So Maddalena = Maddalehna

It therefore follows that Lina (pronounced LEENA) cannot be the diminutive of Maddalena, but only of those names ending in ...LINA and not those ending ...LENA!


Whereas the written word would/could/might use either spelling for the diminutive, that premise/argument does fall apart once phonetics come into play using the mother tongue!

English is the official language of this forum and I believe it is not fair to the rest of the community, to use a different language.

I understand also Spanish and French (not Sicilian) but I believe that we should use only English in this forum, so that everybody can understand and give their contribution.

BTW this is my personal opinion.

That wasn't suggested - but common courtesy would indicate that if statements or data are being posted in another language then to enable all to understand, but more importantly LEARN from them then they should be posted in 'the other language' too.

Forums of this kind are an enormously rich source of information for a lot of people. Many will see the translation of a document and realise that they are then able to understand a similar document which they have or know of.

Therefor it is polite (and more professional) to give a translation of comments too if they are being written in a foreign language (as this IS an English site). IMHO writing in the foreign language and then choosing not to offer a translation is bad manners and shouldn't be used as a mark of 'one-up-manship'. The only losers when that happens is the membership and, of course, the site!

May I pose one more question? Where would one write to get a copy of her (Antonina Rini) baptismal certificate? Or a copy of Giuseppe Rini's marriage certificate?
