Difficulty locating ship manifest and military records

Post by Lindee »

Slowly, but surely the pieces are coming together except for finding the ship manifest for grandparents; Salvatore and Antonina (DiGirolomo form Gibellina Siicily in or around January 1900. They immigrated to Louisiana, so the story goes. I do not beleive they came through Ellis Island. Did they all go through the island?

I am also trying to locate the Sicilian Navy records for this same grandfather. It is believed it was WWI, he left the US and went back to Itay to serve and then returned to Spokane, WA, which is where they lived. I do not know how to search for the Italian military records, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Immigrants to Louisiana went thru ther port of New orleans and we will address that issue subseuqent to military record information.

The Trapani province military records are housed in the section of the Archivio di Stato,Archivi Militari, Cortile Gancia #2, Palermo 90139. Their e-mail address is CEDOCpalermo@esercito.difesa.it (I do not know if this e-mail address is current since their move to the new address above).

If you go to www.mangeruca.com you will find form letters in Italian language which can be used to send your request. =Peter=

Peter, it is DiGirolomo. I know the spelling has probably changed over the years. I have found it in family records as; DiGirolamo with the A rather than the O, so I am not clear on wht it really is to be. Antonina and Salvatore married 1900, so I do not know if she would have traveled with her married name of Guarisco or her maiden name of DiGirolomo. Thank you for your help.

Dear Lindee I went back to Gibellina and went to www.paginebianche.it and put in both spellings and there are no O but all 17 are Di Girolamo. Moeny goes with that spelling. =Peter=

Have you searched member Ricbru's posts?
I believe he has provided detailed information regarding where and how to send for miliary records.
Perhaps you could send him a pm.

I have not tried Ricbru. How do I find that?

I asked my mom about Antonina DiGirolomo and she said she may have been from Palermo or Calabria. Please bear in mind, my mother is 88 and gives me things in stages. She remembers at times. By the way, I agree it is DiGirolomo too.
